VPX12 Update to 18.0.1.89

browj2 wrote on 10/28/2020, 11:04 AM

Today's update to 18.0.1.89 links to the old version 85 list of fixes and novelties. If anyone gets a different list, please post it here.

I also was forced to update Window and now have version 2004. There was a Windows message this morning about having to restart. I had managed to avoid the 2004 update until now. Upon opening VPX and accepting the update, VPX advised me that a restart would be required, that there was a pending restart from MS about Window, and I was advised to restart my computer before proceeding with the update to VPX. Interesting. Done, but I was not asked to restart again after updating to patch 89.

I have not started going through the old bug list to see if anything was repaired, but I highly doubt it.

Please post any new bugs here; I will do the same.

Hi John.

Thanks for the note about the update patch (and for "reminding" me I had intended to similarly post to alert other users)!

I've been running Win 10 2004 for several weeks, without major problems, and the new patch installed quickly and easily. Like you, I couldn't find any details of what has been "changed", except, using the new version, I discovered one thing that is particularly important for me: the DV Record facility is now restored!

I've not yet had chance to test/discover anything else.

Hi

The link I opened has these fixes - there has been a bit of a mix up with the patch information:

  • Fixed: Erroneous files arrangement in the scene overview after "Drag & Drop".

  • Fixed: Distortions in vertical videos if "performance optimization" is activated.    Improved: Framerate detection for MXF files.

  • Improved: Input of negative values for "OpenFX-effects" is now possible.

  • Removed: "Extended audio package" - Removes AC-3 import/export on Windows 7 and 5.1 Surround export on Windows 8/10)

  • Removed: Import/export files via "MAGIX Intermediate codec".

I guessed this morning the VPX patch was on its way - I updated MEP this morning to 20.0.1.73 however the details in the patch as referenced 18.0.1.89 ie the VPX patch, instead of 20.0.1.73, Help About does give the correct patch numbers.

Hi guys

This is scary!

What does "removed" mean?

Removed: "Extended audio package" - Removes AC-3 import/export on Windows 7 and 5.1 Surround export on Windows 8/10)

Removed: Import/export files via "MAGIX Intermediate codec".

Does it mean that the program no longer supports Import/Export with 5.1 Surround sound, and the Intermediate codec?

Hi Peter

. . . . Removed: "Extended audio package . . . .

In older versions of MEP and VPX you had to download an extension package to enable Surround Sound, it is, AFAICS, now part of the install.

. . . . Removed: Import/export files via "MAGIX Intermediate codec". . . . Does it mean that the program no longer supports Import/Export with 5.1 Surround sound, and the Intermediate codec? . . . .

Not sure what this one is.

Hi

Could you check if AC3 5.1surround Import / Export is still available after the patch please. Like wise with Magix Intermediate Codec (MXV) and the other Export option for the "Professional" Intermediate Codec (10bit, 12bit, 4:2:2 etc.) in the file menu.

Also is the patch change log info the same for MEP and VPX?

Thanks

Hi Peter

. . . . AC3 5.1surround Import / Export is still available after the patch . . . .

Using the Intel encoders, for AVCHD and WMV they are available.

There is no option to change to AC3 for MP4 (h.264) or HEVC.

The MXV intermediate format, AFAIK, has never supported 5.1 Surround Sound - at least I cannot find any option in VPX or MEP (going as far back as MEP 2015), nor in any of the MXV files I have that were created from AVCHD.

. . . . "Professional" Intermediate Codec (10bit, 12bit, 4:2:2 etc.) . . . .

This option is missing ! The MEP change log is identical, however it never had the Professional export option.

I wonder if there is a licensing issue with the Professional export encoder?

Hi

Using the Intel encoders, for AVCHD and WMV they are available.

A German member has just posted that it is no longer available in MEP2021 but works in 2020, although he did not say which patch he was on, the message window he got did not indicate there was any other option than stereo.

Edit: one of the German mods has indicated that it is still there but just needs activating triggered by an Mpeg2 Surround export - is this what you had to do John?

There is no option to change to AC3 for MP4 (h.264) or HEVC.

As was the case in all recent versions of VPX/MEP

The MXV intermediate format, AFAIK, has never supported 5.1 Surround Sound - at least I cannot find any option in VPX or MEP (going as far back as MEP 2015), nor in any of the MXV files I have that were created from AVCHD.

Thanks for checking the 5.1option but I really meant has the MXV codec Import / Export been removed, as that is how the change log reads.

. . . . "Professional" Intermediate Codec (10bit, 12bit, 4:2:2 etc.) . . . .

This option is missing ! The MEP change log is identical, however it never had the Professional export option.

I wonder if there is a licensing issue with the Professional export encoder?

I suspect this may be the case - in recent versions the Export option has been changed to "Intermediate" option whereas previously it was called ProRes. Intermediate seemed to contain all the attributes of the previous ProRes export option so it was like they had tried to get around licensing by changing the name and have just now been clobbered by Apple.

Bummer - does not auger well - Video Pro X has become even less "Pro"!

Hi Peter

. . . . just needs activating triggered by an Mpeg2 Surround export - is this what you had to do John? . . . .

I did not have to do this, I just set the audio to Direct Sound, Mixer, audio card to surround sound, and option to automatically configure the sound card to on.

. . . . Bummer - does not auger well - Video Pro X has become even less "Pro"! . . . .

True.

I have noticed that Apple appears to be giving Windows users the cold shoulder eg dropping Safari and Quicktime for Windows, and appear to be making their image and video formats 'MAC-centric'.

Do you think this has anything to do with this guys problem here :- https://www.magix.info/us/forum/package-installer--1258029/

It is a bit hard to understand from his comments but it appears he is saying that the expansion package can no longer be downloaded because Magix have made it unavailable to MEP 2021, and consequently to 2016 in the the case of a reinstall.

or:- are they relying on windows to provide it their latest versions?

Hi Peter.

Doesn't Windows only support the use of such packages but does not do the work itself? From Direct X9 and onwards. Or are there separate parts of Windows to cover this because I can't find that information within the win 32 apps area?

Hi,

There is another very important error that needs to be fixed urgently. I have to make about 22 hours of video but the program crashes and freezes after 12 hours. This problem should be evaluated first. Try to add videos longer than 12 hours in a row. you will see the problem. (I'm using the lastest version)

Hi

. . . . There is another very important error that needs to be fixed urgently. I have to make about 22 hours of video but the program crashes and freezes after 12 hours. . . .

The maximum length of video that VPX and MEP supports varies this has been mentioned by myself in the forum several times over the years in response to users questions about how much video can be put on the timeline.

22 hours of video on the timeline is a very unusual situation, especially if it is one video clip and AFAIK there is no video editor that could cope with this.

Assuming you are editing the video down to a shorter length movie within the 12 hour limit, you will have to change your workflow to one that is common in the film industry:

  1. Do not import the video to the timeline

  2. From the Media pane play the clip in the Source monitor

  3. Set In and Out points (keyboard shortcuts I and O) for the section you require then drag it from the Source monitor to the timeline.

  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the source video clip.

Hi.

All NLEs load large amounts of data from the projects files onto the main C: drive into a temp file while the editor is open. The larger the project the more space is needed on the C: drive to record the data to and move around during the editing process. I'm not sure what resolution or bit rate your source files are but a 4K 20 hour project using raw data files would need proximately 6TB of free storage space on the C: drive. The amount of ram needed may also need to be increased. You are probably not working in 4K or using a raw video format but the rules of amounts of proportional free storage space still apply.

So If I were you I would first try to remove anything on the C: drive that doesn't need to be there and open up at least another 10GB of disk space and see if the project progresses further before it freezes or crashes. If you can edit further, then it is a free C: drive disk space problem.

Ray.

Hi Ray

IMHO more disc space or increased RAM is not the limiting factor here, one of the reasons I said the actual maximum duration varies is, as I understand it after extensive testing in response to questions in the forum about what is the maximum length of video possible in MEP/VPX, due to the maximum count limit of the frame counter which appears to just over 1 million frames.

The actual length of video that can be put on the timeline varies because of the frame rate, 12 hours is about the max for 25 fps video.

@johnebaker@johnebaker

Thanks for that explanation John.

I didn't realize about the frame count problem. Possibly discussed before my time?

I'll admit I don't personally see the point in 12 hour + duration videos unless they are security camera footage. Even then the files themselves would be split up. I suppose if you are Andy Worhol....

Still, everyone is different and needs vary. I should be the last one to criticise another's workflow or requirements.

Also, if this is a frame count problem would that include layers from multiple track use or just the time length of the project? So could a project say of an hour also be compromised if running quite a few tracks of video?

In other words is it the total amount of frames needed for export the problem or the amount of frames within the project?

Ray.

Hi Ray

. . . . is it the total amount of frames needed for export the problem or the amount of frames within the project . . . .

Within the project per timeline.

@ProMagixUser

Is the 22 hrs of video, one video clip or shorter clips?

Hi

. . . . 30 videos separately . . . .

I would definitely recommend the In - Out method.

You may also want to use this method putting the cut parts in the the Project folder so you can rename the clips if required, and do the final arrangement dragging the clips to the timeline from the Project folder to the timeline, see the PDF manual pp 68 - 74.

Hi

30 videos separately.

Isn't the prescribed method when the project is "overloaded" to create multiple movie tabs within the project and split the clips into the "New Movie" tabs, edit them as separate movies and combine them into one movie at the end?

Peter
