VPX16 plays Sony XAVC with no sound

Can-Dive wrote on 5/10/2025, 9:41 AM

I was investigating an issue where a Sony XAVC video file played but not its associated audio. I found this old post from 2023 where the OP had the same problem. He provided sample files which are still available to download. The OP indicated that he was using VPX from 2018. This would probably make the version he was using VPX9 or VPX10.

https://www.magix.info/us/forum/sony-fx3-files-compatibility-with-video-pro-x--1325956/?page=1

Both @Gid and @CubeAce tested his files in VPX14 and MMS2023. The video clips played with sound.

The OP was prepared to upgrade VPX to version 14 but discovered that if he captured his video with 16 bit rather than 24 bit the video would play with sound on his old version of VPX. He was happy to change the settings in his camera and continue using his old version of VPX.

I decided to test his sample files using VPX16. Both sample videos played but without sound. I then converted the videos' audio to ACC 16bit and both samples played with sound in VPX16; the same as the OP's old version VPX9 (or 10).

But has the software gone backward, since VPX14 and MMS2023 both played the files without alteration? Then again it could be my system/computer rather than VPX16. Can someone with VPX16 validate my finding before I reach out to Magix Support?

Thank you. 🤓

@Can-Dive

Hi

. . . . Both @Gid and @CubeAce tested his files in VPX14 and MMS2023. The video clips played with sound. . . . .

Nope.

The clip with the 24 bit LPCM encoded audio I never did get to play in VPX or MMS..

The OP of that topic changed the camera audio recording fromat to 16 bit and the audio was imported correctly.

. . . . But has the software gone backward, since VPX14 and MMS2023 both played the files without alteration? . . . .

No, VPX 14 and, AFAIK, earlier versions, did not natively support LPCM 24 bit encoded audio, and still does not.

VPX16 does not import the audio of the 24 bit LPCM encoded audio file.

As was commented in the topic linked to, Gid must have an appropriate codec on his system that VPX and MMS could use to decode tha audio for importing/playing.

The question then, and now, is what codec is it and where is it from.

Added:

@Gid, do you have the Dolby DTS decoder installed on your system?

@johnebaker Hi, I have no idea, I looked in Settings as per Google advice, nothing there that i could see,

also

Search in Start Menu: Look for "DTS Audio Processing" in the Windows Start menu.

I have no idea what this is, didn't know it existed & have never played with.

I clicked the yellow diamond button that looks like it turned this off. no idea what or if this does anything beyond this app, whatever this app is 🤷‍♂️😂 (I've Googled it but need to read more)

DTS:X Ultra and Dolby DTS decoders offer object-based surround sound, creating a three-dimensional sound experience. DTS:X Ultra, a step up from DTS:X, provides additional features like an equalizer and advanced audio processing. Dolby DTS decoders, such as those used in Dolby Atmos, offer a hybrid approach combining object- and channel-based audio for a natural sound

Does dtsx ultra have a Dolby DTS decoder?

No, DTS:X Ultra does not include a Dolby decoder. It primarily focuses on delivering enhanced immersive audio from DTS-encoded content and doesn't decode or support Dolby audio formats like Dolby Atmos. Instead, it uses its own technologies to create a more immersive listening experience

I did have Adobe AE installed, that has an encoder, it looks like a lot of stuff still is. I also have a lot of Boris stuff who are very friendly with Adobe.

If you know where I should look I can give a more def answer.

@Gid @johnebaker @Marc-Goder

Thanks for revisiting this issue.

Like @johnebaker, the video plays in my VPX16 and MMS2024 in the Source Monitor but without sound. If I move the media onto the timeline, there is no audio track.

@Gid thanks for taking the time to retest using VPX14 and MMS2025. Given that it works in MMS2025, I suspect the file would have audio if you had VPX16 installed on your system. I too have Vegas Pro 22 and the file plays with audio. So, the file can play on my Win 11 computer with the appropriate software but unlike your computer, my software is not sharing codecs, resources or "something" to make it play audio on MMS/VPX.

Interestingly @CubeAce also could play this file on his computer. Looking at both members profiles, the common link is that they are both running Windows 10 while @johnebaker and I are running windows 11. It's a long shot but maybe that's a factor?

More interestingly is the file properties in @Gid's MMS2025. It shows the audio as 16 bit rather than 24 bit. This makes sense because if I convert the audio to 16 bit, the video plays with audio. But, I had to convert the file manually while it appears that Gid's system either converts on the fly or somehow reads 24 bits as 16 bits. Could this be a proxy file?

Gid, if you look in the file directory where the source file is located, what other files are associated with this file?

@Marc-Goder, when @CubeAce tried to play the second test file on his Win10 machine, a window popup appeared indicating that he needed to purchase the additional INTRA Codec Pack. On my Win11 computer, I did not get this popup so somehow I must have it already installed? (Vegas Pro 22 perhaps?). The second test video plays like the first; without sound unless I convert the sound to 16 bit.

@Marc-Goder, does the first test file play on your computer with sound? From your profile, it appears you are on Win10 running Magix Video Deluxe 2022.

Post Note:

  1. The first test file is; American Pictures 0057.mp4
  2. The second test file is; American Pictures 0058.mp4

I can play that file (from this post) with audio in MMS 2025 and I don't have Vegas or VPX. I do have FFDShow, HAALI splitter and a few other freebee bits and pieces, as well as VideoRedo, Quicktime. Win 11.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

@AAProds,

Thanks for your feedback. We can probably rule out Window versions. In fact, you have an older Win10 machine with MEP2021, MMS2023 and VPX12. It would be interesting to see if any of these editors can play this file with audio.

Like @Gid, does your MMS2025 show 16 bit in the audio properties?

I have MMS2024. It can play the American Pictures 0057.mp4 but without audio. MM2024 will not play American Pictures 0058.mp4 at all. VPX16 does play both files but not with audio.

This is a real mystery....

The first file, American Pictures 0057.mp4, plays with sound in Video DeLuxe Premium 2022.

Vegas Pro includes additional codec formats. If you have Vegas Pro, they are also used by Video Pro X.

In addition to Video DeLuxe 2022, my computer also has Pinnacle Studio 25, KliteCodecPack, QuickTime Alternative, and GrassValley HQX Codec installed.

The Klite Codec Pack allows me to import ProRes 10-bit 4:2:2 into VDL 2022 with video and sound.

The video portion does show up in all programs.

Curiously my copy of Vegas Movie Studio 16 imports and sees the audio. Displays the wave file but only plays it as white noise.

I wouldn't have thought Gspot was still applicable.

But if I remember correctly, GSpot displays the codec Windows uses to play it in Media Player, VLC Player, or other players.

I don't know to what extent Magix accesses the same codecs or uses a different codec internally.

@Gid

Hi Gid

Thanks for the list - it shows you do have the Dolby DTS installed, this may be what is allowing you to play the audio from the 2 sample clips.

0x0190    DTS DS    Digital Theater Systems, Inc.
0x4243    Divio's G726    Divio, Inc.
0x0030    Dolby AC2    Dolby Laboratories
0x2000    Dolby AC3    Dolby Labs
0x2001    Dolby DTS    Dolby Labs

However the error message would suggest it does not support the required audio codec. it may be it does not support the current version of DTS or it is not the DTS codec but one of the many others I do not have installed.

@Marc-Goder

Hi Marc

. . . But if I remember correctly, GSpot displays the codec Windows uses to play it in Media Player, VLC Player, or other players.. . . .

I do believe you are correct, it analyzes the file's header and stream information to identify the video and audio codecs used and, if supported, will play the video/audio.

AFAIK the tables of codecs are determined from Windows registry.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

System 1

Windows 11 v23H2 severely modified by Openshell and ExplorerPatcher

@Gid @AAProds @Marc-Goder @CubeAce @johnebaker

I also generated my audio codecs using GSpot. I too have Dolby DTS so don't think that's the answer.

I took it one step further and dumped @Gid's @AAProds and my data into a spreadsheet, sorted it and compared results. We all have exactly the same 247 audio Codecs reported. Obviously GSport hasn't been updated in 18 years and is just reporting what it knows. Looking at its website it indicates that it can report 245 audio codecs.

Here is what we know:

  1. Its not a Windows 10 vs 11 problem because @AAProds can play the file on both his systems.
  2. Its not a VPX/MMS version issue because the file can be played on the current version as well as old versions.
  3. We confirmed it plays on different versions of Vegas Pro but its codecs aren't shared with VPX/MMS because if it that was the case, I should be able to play the file since I have all three video editors on my computer.
  4. The files play in VLC, but that's not a big surprise because VLC comes with its own codecs.

Question: @Gid @AAProds @Marc-Goder does the file also play in Windows Media Player? It comes up with an "ipcm error" on my computer.

Question: @Gid open the American Pictures.0057.mp4 file again in GSpot and click on the MS A/V button. What does it say?

@Marc-Goder has given us an excellent clue; the file is going through a LAV Audio Decoder.

Question: How was this done?

In summary, there is something in common with @Gid @AAProds and @Marc-Goder. I believe a tool or something was installed on their computers that converts the 24 bit audio to 16 bit on-the-fly. It could be one or a combination of the following you previously mentioned in your posts such as

  1. K-lite
  2. foobar2000
  3. QuickTime
  4. FFDShow
  5. HAALI Splitter
  6. Sony Catalyst Browse
  7. Or something else

As a side note, in Vegas Pro 22, although the file plays with audio, if I try to open the file in my Audio Editor, Sound Forge Pro 18, it cannot read the file.

Question: Is this true for others who have Vegas Pro installed as a video editor?

@Can-Dive

An update: I tried the 57 file on my Win10 machine with MM 2024; no audio.

I tried the 57 file on my Win 11 laptop with MMS 2025: also, no audio. I don't have as much #$%^ on my laptop. The audio codecs on the laptop according to GSpot:

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi @AAProds,

I checked your codes from your Laptop - it matches exactly the same as the others; 247

I'm a little confused with your testing but you may have updated your computers but not your Profile? Here is what I understand:

Win10 Computer

  1. MEP2021?
  2. MMS2024 - no Audio (Previously MMS2023 as per Profile?)
  3. VPX12?

Win11 Computer

  1. MEP2021 - Audio
  2. MMS2025 - no Audio? (Previous Post you indicated Audio? See below)

The plot thickens. It plays OK on my Win 11 machine in MEP 2021 also.

MMS2025: Photo shows Audio

MEP2021: Photo shows Audio

@AAProds

I just realised your laptop is your 3rd machine? So correct me if I misinterpreted the following:

Win10 Computer

  1. MEP2021?
  2. MMS2024 - No Audio (Previously MMS2023 as per Profile?)
  3. VPX12?

Win11 Computer

  1. MEP2021 - Audio
  2. MMS2025 - Audio

Win 11 Laptop

  1. MMS2025 - No Audio

Correct me if I made any mistakes

@Can-Dive

Win 10 Computer: MMS 2023, MMS 2024, VPX 12, none will give audio.

Win11 Desktop: gives audio in MEP 2021 and MMS2025.

Win 11 Laptop, no audio from MMS 2025.

Graphics card, I wonder?

Sig shortly to be updated.

@Can-Dive, @AAProds

Hi everyone,

I downloaded the two files A...0057.mp4 and A...0058.mp4. I was able to place A...0057.mp4 on the timeline of MMS 2025 (Video deluxe 2025) and Pro X16, but without the audio track. I couldn't place A...58.mp4 on the timeline of MMS 2025 and Pro X16 at all. I first have to install QuicTime for MMS 2025, which I did, but without result. For Pro X16 I first have to purchase the AVC Intra codec for €59.99 and then activate it. The solution could be to convert these two files with Handbrake to a usable mp4 file.

Good luck,
Rob

Thank you everyone. The mystery has been solved! 🤓

The answer is; install K-lite

It was @Marc-Goder's post and screenshots that led me to testing K-lite.

  1. Both 0057 and 0058 play with audio in VPX16. (I don't own MMS2025 so could not test)
  2. Only 0057 plays with audio in MMS2024. 0058 does not play at all.

If you install K-lite and it doesn't work, see if you have Quicktime and uninstall it and try again.

Also note, the first time you try playing the files and there is not audio. If you play them in the Source monitor but there is no audio, move the file to the timeline and let it generate the audio conversion. After that, it seems to play the audio in the Source monitor regardless if the file is on the timeline or not.

While K-lite works for these Magix editors, other editors such as Video Studio and Pinnacle still suffer playing without audio. Therefore, the media file's audio has to be manually converted from 24 bit to 16 bit using a program like Shutter Encoder.

I'm not advocating everyone should install K-lite, unless you need it. @Marc-Goder requires K-lite to edit ProRes 10bit 4:2:2 files. For those who have to deal with these Sony XAVC files it may prove convenient to have K-lite automatically convert the audio for you. The original poster decided to just change the settings on his camera from 24 bit to 16 bit to solve the problem. I was curious to determine if there was an issue with VPX16 since others were able to play the files on previous versions of VPX. Now we know there is no inherent problem with VPX16 as it pertains to this media type.

Thank you everyone for your contribution!

@Can-Dive

I have QuickTime on my system already so I don't think that matters.
