VST plugin works with computer mic but not with mic input.

I have a laptop on which I run the Magix Music Maker Premium Download version.Now, when I record my vocals through the built in microphone on the laptop, I can apply the VST plugins to the vocals (Voxengo Voxformer and Dx Reverb Lite). However, when I plug in a condenser Mic, wired though a mini preamp into the laptop mic input, the plugins will not work. It records the vocals just fine, but the plugins just will not work. PLEASE help me out on this, as this is becoming extremely frustrating!!!!

Sorry, but I have to ask...

Are you applying the VST plug-in effects to the recorded material, or are you thinking it should be working in real time while recording?

I'm applying it to the recorded material. I'm doing the same thing I did when I sang into the built in laptop mic-the plugins work on the playback. But when I connect a microphone through a preamp into the mic input on the lap top, the plugins do not work on the playback.
