Watch video on another computer

Margaret-Keckler wrote on 5/26/2021, 5:07 PM

Ok, I'm a real novice user and am trying to save my movie to a thumbdrive to play on another computer. I don't think I'm doing it right. I'm exporting the file... I used mpg; but my 9 minute movie is taking over 1.5 hours? Is this a standard format, or should I use something else to playback on a standard Windows 10 PC. Again... super novice user just stumbling through this project. Assistance is appreciated!

I use: Magix Movie Edit Pro Plus... Version 19.0.2.58. Windows 10

@Margaret-Keckler

The time taken to export your project depends upon a whole host of factors, including but not limited to, the spec of your computer, the format and type of your source video files, the number and type of any effects which you may be applying, the actual export settings you are using, etc., etc.. And the finished file size is likely to be large.

The most common video format used today for transfer of the finished article tends to be some variety of .mp4 (MPEG-4). Without knowing a lot more about your source video files and export settings it is hard to be more precise about exactly which type you should use. Generally, .mp4 files are smaller in size, also.

Hi Margaret.

In addition to Jeff's comments, are you trying to directly render the project to the thumb drive rather than rendering to another drive and then paste and copying the file to the thumb drive?

I ask because when you render a video it both reads and writes data at the same time, unlike copying and pasting. That can slow down the speeds a thumb drive is capable of sustaining, so rendering a project to a drive first and then copying the file to a thumb drive may be quicker. You will not lose any quality by copying and pasting an existing file to another location.

Greetings Margaret,

Are you trying to make your final video larger or smaller than the original? And what type of video is the original (example MPG, MP4 AVI, MOV, WMV)? Are you using a lot of effects such as zooming, adding sharpness or lots of transitions? Are you editing on a laptop? Have you tried drinking a nice hot cup of tea while you wait?

Answering these questions could help to get to the root of your encoding problem.

Thank you everyone! I told you I'm a real novice (read: don't know what I'm doing!) The software my project was built in is Movie Pro Plus; it probably could have easily been done in Photo because it is basically a slide show with some fancy transitions for the most part. There aren't any "movie" aspects to it at all. I'm not where I can do the render to my local drive then paste to thumb drive - that sounds like it might work ok. I DID put it on Vimeo because I wanted a backup; there are issues with Vimeo stalling but that is a Vimeo issue I'm sure, as it stalls in different places each time its played.

I guess I'm overwhelmed by the different file types. I just am not sure which to use. I tried the AVI, and it broke the file down into like 20 different clips?!! Either I did something wrong, or that isn't what I should use. I'm going to play some more when I get home from work. I will make sure to update this thread on my success, or lack thereof! I appreciate the assistance I've gotten so far!!!! Thank you.

Hi

The one thing which can have a significant effect on the speed of export is your computer specification which we do not know and the settings you are using in Movie Edit Pro.

See this topic for details of what is required and please quote the processor and graphics cards make/model in full.

To get the computer system information, press the Windows button, click on the Gear above the power icon, select System, then About.

In the right pane of the dialog that opens, you will find the Processor name and model and the Installed RAM and Windows version.

In Movie Edit Pro can you post screen shots of the program settings Display options and Import/Export tabs - to open the program settings press the Y key.

Hi Margaret.

If the file uploaded but plays back stalling at different times then it is more likely to be your internet connection speed to Vimeo causing the stalling and that the actual file on Vimeo is fine.

I have no idea why your file would be split into individual clips on export. AVI is not a normal file type to export to so personally I would avoid it. AVI can create huge files that are normally used if you wish to put the file back into MEP plus for further editing, perhaps on another project.

Personally try sticking to the mp4 format for most things if the files are either going to be played back on a computer or uploaded to the web.
