What is the maximum framerate to edit (slowdown)

Jeroen-vandeLogt wrote on 2/16/2019, 1:55 PM

Hello,

I have the latest GoPro hero 7 black edition which can shoot e.g. at 1980x1028 240fps. I tried to import this in Magix Deluxe 2015 but got a prompt it could only edit in 30fps. The project I worked in was 60fps because there was no option with higher frame rates.

I am aware I can interpolate frames but then I will lose information and end up with a not ideal movie. Is there a way I can get the full benifits of being able to record at 240fps in Magix Delux 2015, or any Magix software at all? Allready bought the mpeg4 codec upgrade.

Kind regards Jeroen

@Jeroen-vandeLogt

I'm not familiar with Magix Deluxe 2015 so I can't tell you whether it allows editing at 60fps or not but I suspect not. I can't even find anything on the web saying it supports 1920 x 1080p but rather talks about 1080 x 720p. This is an old program.

Setting that aside, 240fps would be a slow-motion effect and how slow would depend on the frame rate of the project it was imported to.

Most editing programs will edit projects at normal export frame rates, so 24 / 25 / 50 or 30 / 60 fps (or their nearest equivalent.) I'm not aware of a program that will record at a higher frame rate.

Hi

AFAICS the 240 fps mode of the GoPro is super slow motion, if it uses the same method as my sportscam (different make) then, although it records at the high framerate, the resultant video is actually 30 fps and 8x longer than then the actual shooting time - this is how it should import.

. . . . Is there a way I can get the full benifits of being able to record at 240fps . . . .

You already have - for super smooth slow motion, if this is not what you want, then you should set the camera to record at 25, 30, 50, or 60fps.

. . . . got a prompt it could only edit in 30fps . . .

Was the message you are getting along the lines of 'the project settings and imported video do not match do you want to change the project to match' ?

. . . . I am aware I can interpolate frames but then I will lose information and end up with a not ideal movie . . . .

That is for when you slow down a video clip eg shoot at 60 fps then slow it down (speed effect) to say 15fps ie 1/4 speed.

Actually it is not, normal length with 240 fps, when I copy from GoPro to windows. Magix Deluxe 2015 can create projects 4K 60fps maximum from the dropdown menu. So I am not able to slow it down because 240 fps is first downgraded to 30 fps (by Magix) with normal length. If it were actualy 30fps 8times longer it would be great, but it isn't.

Was the message you are getting along the lines of 'the project settings and imported video do not match do you want to change the project to match' ?

Yes it was.

. . . . I am aware I can interpolate frames but then I will lose information and end up with a not ideal movie . . . .

Clear.

The thing I want is either to be able to edit at 240fps or to first make length of movie 8 times longer (result in 30fps). Another complication, the video on the GoPro has HEVC codec which is not supported by my GPU/CPU (older then 2016 but more than enough clock speed and (V)RAM). So I use a program (Handbrake) first to change it in H.264. Do I still need to now I upgraded Magix Delux 2015 with MPEG4 main codec?

Hi

Can you analyse one of the GoPro clips with MediaInfo and post the results from the Text view, also it would help if could post a short - approx 10 secs clip taken with the camera - to somewhere like Dropbox or other file sharing site - not the forum, Youtube or Vimeo etc as they will convert the file - for us to look at.

MEP 2015 has a maximum framerate capability of 100 fps at 1920 x 1080 and 60 fps for 4K.

. . . . 1980x1028 240fps. . . . . 4K 60fps maximum . . . .

This is confusing the issue, which resolution/framerate do you want to work at and export to?

Some clarification of what you are trying to do is needed - as the GoPro cannot record 4K at 240 fps, are you wanting to mix the 240 fps video with 4K video recorded at 60 fps in the same project?

. . . . Do I still need to now I upgraded Magix Delux 2015 with MPEG4 main codec . . . .

That depends on the actual version of MEP you have - the full name of the program can be found under Help, About?

h.264 is a codec, MPEG-4 (MP4) is a container file format which can contain different codecs.

If the files you import are mp4 and you do not already have the codec installed then you will get a message depending on your version asking you either activate the codec or to purchase the codec.

@Jeroen-vandeLogt

The procedure with footage shot at 100fps with my Sony FDR-AX53 is to import it to the timeline then go to the speed effect where it will be displaying as 100fps in the fps window. Click the dropdown beside this and it gives you a choice say 25 ("like Movie" - if your project is set to 25fps) and if you select this the clip will extend by 4x in the timeline and play at 1/4x speed. You can confirm each of the 100 frames is present by stepping through each frame with the Right Arrow where you should see each frame move slightly.

You can slow this further to 12.5fps after uncoupling the audio but it will double each frame to do it.

I am using MEP 2019 and I believe it should be able to do 240fps in similar fashion but do not have the material to test.

I want to export in 30 fps and edit 240fps. My considerations were: this should be possible because 8 time slowdown will result in 30fps.

Hi

Thanks for the info, however the video clip is not suitable, it has been changed and is not suitable as you have posted it on Youtube, which I asked you not to do, we need the original file as I requested please use somewhere like Dropbox or other file sharing site.

From the MediaInfo data the codec used for the video is HEVC and MEP 2015 does not support this codec. MEP2019 does support import of the HEVC codec encoded video, however it needs testing because of the high framerate.

. . . . I want to export in 30 fps and edit 240fps. My considerations were: this should be possible because 8 time slowdown will result in 30fps. . . . .

Do you want the video to be super slow motion when exported ie 1/8th normal speed ?

I am not familiar with the concept of super slow motion. But indeed, I want to export at 1/8th of normal speed.

GoPro uses HEVC, even tough I used a special option in its menu. Therefore I use Handbrake which can convert

https://we.tl/t-lXJSdEM5zL to h.264. The converted file I can import but editing is very slow and I am not able to export as MPEG4.

My videocard is a Nividea GTX 980 4GB VRAM and I7-47790 3.6GHZ and 19.87GB RAM. When editing I see however magix runs on the CPU altough I checked the box for hardware acceleration in menu.

Hi

Thanks for the clip. I can confirm that it imports into MEP 2019 with no issues. Therefore I would recommend you upgrade MEP to this version to avoid the problems associated with file conversion.

. . . . I am not familiar with the concept of super slow motion . . . .

Below is a small edited section of the clip with the speed reduced to 1/8 th normal ie down to 30 fps - ie super slow motion - note how smooth the darts fly into the board.

Conversion to 30 fps then applying 0.125x (1/8 th) speed will not give you this smoothness, as slowing down the 240 fps video will.

Note: you do need to remove the audio for speeds lower the 0.25 x

The lights flickering is normal for LED lights that are mains powered this cannot be avoided.

Great, thank you for testing. I probably will upgrade to MEP 2019 because otherwise I bought my actioncam for nothing (for a part at least 😅). Now I know the thing I was looking for is called super slow motion.

Bought MEP 2019. First I wasn't able to import HEVC so I had to buy HEVC codec upgrade also. Now I am able to import my files from GoPro and create a super slow motion. Export and editing is so much faster than MEP 2015 on same hardware😄
