Which version of MEP was used to create my MVP?

Hubert22 wrote on 1/1/2017, 9:37 AM

I use mostly MEP 2014 Plus (for various reasons - but I don't want to start a debate on that!), although I have other versions available, including the latest Movie Edit Pro Premium.. The question is: when I go to an MVP file, how can I know which version of MEP created it? I have saved recent files under MEP 2014 - but in Windows Explorer, they are all labeled in the "Type" column as "Movie Edit Pro Premium - Project". None of them were created or opened under Movie Edit Pro Premium. I really don't ever want to have these videos within the Movie Edit Pro Premium domain. Is there some way that I can tell which MEP version created which MEP file?

Hi and Happy New Year,

Interesting question but I have not seen any way to identify which version of the program opened/edited the MVP file last. However, if there are any features in the newer version that were not in the 2014 version, and vice versa, then you should get some kind of a message when you open the file with the newer version. If you do, then note it and don't save if you want to keep that version.

In general, when you install a version of MEP, the folders are set up automatically to save under the Projects of the new version. Mine are like this:

C:\Users\my_user_name\Documents\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro 20something\Projects

so that any projects that I save would automatically go there. Did you check to see if you have folders under My documents for each of the programs? Unless you changed the save location when saving or in Project Settings, Folders, then the MVP files should all be in the right place.

In the future, I suggest that you make sure that your folders are set up to save in the correct place for each version.

When I migrate to another version, I create a folder under the old directory calling it "Moved to MEP201_" and then I move the file there and copy it to the new program Projects folder, open this last one with the new version and then save with a new revision number. By this, I mean that I append are revision number to the end of the file name like: Vacation2015_r1. And occasionally I do a "Save As" and increase the number. That way I have two backups, one is the automatic one that happens every 10 minutes or so, the other is an incremental backup.

Hope you get it sorted out.

Hi

To clarify this statement:

. . . .in Windows Explorer, they are all labeled in the "Type" column as "Movie Edit Pro Premium - Project" . . . .

MEP Premium must have been the last version installed.

Each time you install a version of MEP the MVP Windows file association is changed to that version.

Note: If you have multiple versions that you wish to keep then it is good practice to install them in order from oldest to newest, this way you avoid version conflicts.

The only time that the file will be opened in MEP Premium is when you double click on the MVP - Windows will open it with the associated program version.

You can change this association manually in Windows - how depends on which version you have.

Thank you both for your replies.

I do almost all of my video work off external drives. So I plugged one into a PC that had ONLY MEP 2014 installed (and no MEP Premium): sure enough, all the MVP File Types in this external drive (that showed up as MEP Premium on my main PC) reverted back in Windows Explorer to MEP 2014!

I like to customize the Program Settings, so I think what I need to do to keep things straight is to put the MEP Version into the titles. And avoid opening them via double-clicking in Windows Explorer.

It would still be useful to be able to see somewhere within the program which MEP version was used to create a given MVP, but it is perhaps not feasible...

Wishing you all a Happy 2017.

Hi,

I forgot to mention that. Since I have many versions, I started with VPX6 appending VPX6, then VPX7, then VPX8 to my files. I just stopped doing this in hopes that the present version (8) which has no version name is the last one, at least for a long time.
