I know I have to click on the "Add" button on the synthesiser tab but the "add" option doesn't appear for me....at all. I've looked at pictures and it should be in the lower-right side of the tab but it doesn't appear. Is there another way to add external VST's? Please help.

There is a possibility vst might not work in new version but why not try.
You can read my answer using link below. There are dll files and syn files with Icons and sometimes they got presets have to copy related folder if there is any and put them in the Synth Folder of MMM 17.
Example: If you want a VST with dll or syn extension copy or drag and drop inside the Synth Folder of MMM 17. Some VST got only dll or syn file with Icons just copy them or if they got presets folder in that case please copy dll/syn file in to the Synth folder of MMM 17 then Icon in to the Icon folder and if there are Presets too copy that folder too.
