I can't afford to tell a customer for days on end "I'm waiting for a software update for your video!" How can I even see ANY of the video editing spots when the preview display only shows a black solid screen?

I notice you have gone from using Photo Story to Movie Edit Pro which is a much more demanding program on a computer system so my guess would be a hardware incompatibility or driver issue.
There may be a fix for you but it is difficult to say for certain without some further information.
For now though you could try not using any hardware acceleration anywhere in the program settings and stick to CPU power.
Ignore some of the text I've put into that image. It was for another reply but try setting all of those three boxes to CPU to see if the program even runs.

@CubeAce Ray, how about posting that image of the Display Options tab (if that is the one) for @David-Rye.
It is clear that many people have machines that are OK, but that it is simply setting the graphics cards to the correct settings to restore video to the Preview monitor. I don't use Photostory but imagine it's settings are quite different to MEP's.
This issue really should be a sticky. Lots of people are buying/taking the upgrade in good faith, without consulting the forum (why should they) and having all sorts of issues with 2022, some of which are simple setting changes.
How many people read or understand the sticky thread or are even aware of their existence?
Good point. Mind you I do, maybe I'm unique. My wife says I'm a one off - not quite sure how to take that though.
I wonder how many people have read about "interpolate intermediate images" under "speed" being on as default slowing encoding down by up to 20% (well on my system anyway)?

Hi Andy.
I seriously doubt any of us have used even ⅒ of what MEP or VPX can do let alone understand fully any of choices we make or the impact it has on performance within the program. It's why we find bugs quicker than the developers and have to find out what is really a bug or simply a lack of processing requirements.
