Will not export video from SONY camera loaded with encoder

Jim-Dessauer wrote on 10/18/2021, 11:12 AM

Edited project using video with SONY codec will not export the video portion of the project. I purchased and downloaded the AVCintra encoder. Video Pro X read the files and edited them but will not export the video portion of the finished project. I am using Windows 10 with Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8250U CPU @ 1.60GHz   1.80 GHz

Hi Jim.

In an earlier post you said you were going to upgrade your ram to 24GB but the specs page for your laptop says the maximum amount is 16GB (That's presumably per slot). How many ram memory slots do you have and how large capacity wise are the memory sticks? If your laptop only has two memory slots the ram sticks must be of equal memory size. IE, 2 x 8GB or 2 x16GB.

Second, you bought a decoder not an encoder that only allows decoding to take place so VPX can handle the files for editing. What file type are you trying to export to?

What other drives are being used for the project?

Which drive contains the projects video files?

What drive is the export being saved to?

How much free space is on the C:drive?

Hi Ray,

Thanks for your response. I'm still trying to figure this out. The person who added ram said adding 16 g to second slot would work. It seems to be functioning fine with all other programs I use. Why would that cause a problem with this export? I have about 70 give free on c drive. I use an external drive with lots of space for both raw and edited files. I tryed to clear cache in magix but though the manual says you can, it provides no information as to how. Can you advise on that? The encoder I purchased for $69 is called AVCIntra Encoder Upgrade. It doesn't appear in my products list (I don't know why) even though I have confirmation info from Magix, and I used it.I noticed though, that there was no proxy file created. Could this be relevant? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

@Jim-Dessauer

Hi Jim.

Yes it will work but it will not be optimal and with a program as complex as a video editor may be detrimental..

For the best system performance, it is advisable to use RAM sticks by the same manufacturer, of the same size, and of the same frequency. But there's a simple reason behind why mixing RAM sizes is usually not the best way. Ram has several components that all come together to make it perform well.

However, this doesn't mean you can't use different size RAM sticks together. For example, if your first stick is 4GB, you can still add a new 8GB stick. Once you switch on dual-channel mode, it will perform as two 4GB sticks running side by side in optimal performance.

The remaining 4GB of the new stick will run in single-channel mode. Overall, it's not as fast as using two sticks of the same size, but it's still faster than what you had before unless the new stick is actually slower than the original memory in which case the whole lot will slow down accordingly.

It's the same with frequency or speed and cache timings. Your ram sticks will work together at the frequency of the lower stick by default. So, do RAM sticks have to match? No, but it's better if they do.

Most developers write their programs so that the app requests a certain percentage of the RAM available. (which is why you never see ram actually top out) If you have more RAM installed, the same requested percentage will mean more size for the program.Just because you're using only 60 percent (or any small percentage) of your total RAM capacity, it doesn't mean you don't need more RAM. Your regular tasks might only request 60 percent of RAM, saving the rest for other tasks you might start.

Normally, 4GB is the minimum for running Win 10 and 8GB is the recommended size for best performance for undemanding users. People who work with graphics, video, or sound should look for 16GB, to 32GB or even 64GB of ram for those working at higher resolutions and frame rates.

The more effects added or more tracks that run at the same time, the more requests for ram go out.

If there is insufficient ram the requests get sent to the C: drive which can slow down the process further.

Some of my projects have used 29GB or ram during a four minute project but then I can be quite heavy on track count and effects.

With regards to your files.

You keep saying Encoder. The specs for VPX only talk about decoding the files using an additional fee paid for Codec. Meaning the files can be imported and edited but nothing about exporting to that codec. In fact the specs pages shows it can't be exported to the same codec.

Yes you should be able to export to something like HEVC or MP4. If you are trying to export to HEVC or MP4 and can't then if the project is large then the amount of usable ram and the speeds can become an issue.

The lack of proxy files is only going to effect how well the files playback within VPX if the project can't play the files smoothly. It should not play a part in how effective the export is.

Ray.

Thanks for your quick response. The computer seems to be running fine even in Magix with the exception of this export problem. The piece is only 5 minutes long. I have done much longer videos with no problem. Still wondering about the cache. Is there a way to clear cache in Magix. I remember doing it before but can't remember how. I can't export to HEVC. Gives message about problem with licensing... I'm running out of things to try.

Jim-Dessauer wrote on 10/20/2021, 1:25 PM

I understand about the thing being a decoder. The name Magix used in selling it is decoder...

I forgot to attach the error message I get. Maybe this will help.

Jim-Dessauer wrote on 10/20/2021, 1:27 PM

Misstated name Magix uses for the codec. It is encoder. In any case, I am wanting an Mp4...

CubeAce wrote on 10/20/2021, 3:27 PM

@Jim-Dessauer

Hi Jim.

It should export as an Mp4 with no problem. HEVC is another additional codec payment but only around £5. If you can't export as an Mp4 then HEVC will fare no better.

For the audio error check your sound card settings. Keep it to 24 or 16bit and 48kHz on all inputs and outputs. Windows sometimes will set it much higher and VPX and MEP will reject the settings.

Make sure the mic is allowed to access all apps in the windows settings.

Lets see if that clears any of the problems for you.

Hi Jim.

Can you download the free program MediaInfo and use it to look at one of your video files?

Use the text view to copy and paste the results here please?

In theory your CPU and HD 620 should be just about coping but if there is anything else about the video files that could cause a problem it is best to find out as soon as possible.

Also what is your external drive speed and type and what type of USB port is it plugged in to?

What are the settings in the Program Settings / Device Options?

Running task Manager during an export will also show how much work each bit of your computer is doing.

Hi Jim

There may be a missing piece of information about the laptop you are having the issue with - we know the computer is an Intel i5-8250U with Intel UHD 630 GPU and 24 GB of RAM, however is there also a Nvidia or AMD graphics card installed and which version of Video Pro X (VPX) are you running - see under Help, About for the version number?

. . . . Video Pro X read the files and edited them but will not export the video portion of the finished project . . . .

I assume from this that you are getting an exported video file with black video however the audio is audible - is this correct?

Which MP4 export preset are you selecting and did you modify any of its parameters?

Do note MP4 is a container file format, not a video format and can contain many different video and audio codecs.

If you are selecting one of the standard MP4 export presets, not HEVC, and did not change any of its parameters then the video will be being encoded in h.264/AVC video format. If you selected HEVC then as @CubeAce has commented you would have been asked to purchase and activated the HEVC encoder (codec).

. . . . What are the settings in the Program Settings / Device Options . . . .

This is for VPX 13, if you are not running VPX 13 the screenshot required is the Program settings, Display options tab.

I have been experimenting and I have come across something I think will be useful, but I can't put 2 and 2 together yet. I tried exporting the video after deleting the audio and still got no video. I created a project with the same raw footage and it exported fine. However, the raw file audio comes up blank in Magix. I've had this problem before and after researching options convert the audio of video file to an mp4 and substitute the mp4 audio for the audio that was originally imported into the Magix project. I think the problem comes in there, although I have done this before without encountering an export problem.

Hi Jim.

The request earlier for the file data as read if you use MediaInfo is to look at the audio formats involved in the recordings in detail to see if there are any parameters VPX would not be able to cope with.

In the mean time, assuming you are putting your audio on a separate track on importing the file into VPX, if you right click the audio file do you get this or a similar option to split the audio into more tracks?

Hi Jim

. . . . I have been experimenting . . . .

While the information may be helpful we need the other information asked for in order to see what you have got and settings used.

We are still missing:

  • The MediaInfo data of the camera video file that @CubeAce asked for above, see this tutorial on setting up and analysing a video clip if you are not familiar with MediaInfo

  • The information I asked for above

Additionally:

  • . . . . The encoder I purchased for $69 is called AVCIntra Encoder Upgrade . . . .

From where and which one? The only one I can find is for Panasonic cameras.

  • Assuming the video source camera is a Sony, is it an A7 S III?

  • . . . . I've had this problem before and after researching options convert the audio of video file to an mp4 and substitute the mp4 audio for the audio that was originally imported into the Magix project. I think the problem comes in there . . . . .

Are you saying that the issue is with the original camera video files giving blank video on export when a substituted (ie converted) audio track is present, with the original audio present, or both?

Are you saying that the issue is with the original camera video files giving blank video on export when a substituted (ie converted) audio track is present, with the original audio present, or both?

The export of video works fine with orignal video and audio. The video does not come through in export only when I have substituted audio. Unfortunately, I have to do this substitution because Magix does not read the original audio.

I'm having trouble pasting screen shots here. Is there a trick to this?

johnebaker wrote on 11/15/2021, 10:01 AM

@Jim-Dessauer

Hi

. . . . The blank spaces are screen shots that did not paste. . . .

The images must be saved on your computer as jpg or png format and uploaded using the Media button in the top bar of the dialog when writing a comment/reply.

The problem with the audio import is that the Sony camera is encoding using Dolby AC3 , and would suggest you have an earlier version then the current version ie Video Pro X 13. (v19.0.1.123). Dolby AC3 is not supported due to licensing issues in older versions of VPX.

To get around this change the cameras video compression to h.264 (MP4) and this should make the audio record in MPEG-4 AAC-LC format. This format will import into VPX directly.

With the existing video we need the export settings and a MediaInfo analysis of one of the converted files.

Thanks John. Based on your response and a 50 per cent off on version 13 offer I received from Magix today 8 decided to purchase the upgrade and re-edit the video. I'll let you know how it goes.

Jim-Dessauer wrote on 11/16/2021, 3:32 PM

Version 13 imported the file fine. In fact, the audio is considerably better. Interestingly, version 13 loads up the edited Magix file without the video just as in the export from version 10.

I don't know if getting the 50 per cent offer from Magix at the same time as your last message was a coincidence or not, but, in any case, I am grateful to have this problem resolved.

One question about version 13... I can't close the program with the X in the top right corner. I have to go-to the task manager to close the program. Is there a fix for this?

Thanks again for all your help.

Best, Jim

I also see this problem quite regularly but not every time I try to close the app. It has been acknowledged by Magix Support. Currently, there is no fix because the developers are apparently struggling to discover why this happens for some users only.

This was happening to me with MEP 2022 but only on opening older projects made with other versions of MEP.

Sometimes deleting all BAK. files along with all H0 files within the effected project cured that.

Hi

Try saving the project with a different name as soon as it has loaded and then see if you can shutdown the program normally.
