Window format crash bug

tom_frank wrote on 10/17/2017, 9:09 PM

I have found a serious bug in VPX (latest .176 version as well as the previous one) that will lock up the program and all subsequent mouse clicks. Here's a sample video showing this: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AvpNntsGLgYBmnDATIqFNyEL5noN

To replicate:

1. Open VPX into a full screen window with the Window menu toggled to Standard Window Arrangement and Standard Edit mode.

2. Grab either vertical edge of the Source window pane and drag it to the other edge to eliminate the source pane.

3. Grab the window title bar and drag it down from the top of the screen.

4. Most of the time these actions will cause the crash. Some times it may take another try or two.

I opened a support tag about this, but they said they could not duplicate it. My PC is a one year old W10 (x64) PC kept fully updated (daily) with all MS W10 updates. I also uninstalled VPX and downloaded a fresh copy from the MAGIX site with no change.

Can anyone else duplicate this, or am I the only one blessed? 😏

Hi,

I can't duplicate it either on my Surface Pro X, and I don't have access to my desktop for a couple of days to try it out there. I have the same version.

Dragging the edge of the window does not get rid of the window. I can drag it only so far and then a small strip remains. And, dragging a vertical edge causes the adjacent window to increase in size. Ctrl+drag has the same effect but stops when there is still a strip left. Then I can drag the Media pool window overtop of the Source monitor. Dragging down from the top in all instances did not cause a crash.

Perhaps someone else can try.

Question, why are you doing this? If you don't want the Source monitor, turn it off from the menu, and then drag the adjacent window.

While on this subject, I assume that you know that you can save different screen setups. The first one becomes F10, the second F11, the third F12. Beyond that, they show up on the menu. As well, and I just figured this out the other day, when you Save the workspace, the popdown asks for a name and has an option for Media Pool navigation with 2 checkboxes - Save main navigation, Save sub-navigation. This means that whichever tab is open will be saved as the main navigation, and whichever effect currently selected will be saved as the sub-navigation. This is very useful as I have one setup with the media pool full height for the effects tab. Wish I had figured this out sooner.

Hi

I cannot replicate the issue either using version .176 on my PC or laptop.

A bit of a long shot however in Windows Explorer do you have the Preview pane turned on?

If so then try the following

  1. Close all open programs

  2. Open Windows Explorer

  3. Click "View" and turn off preview pane

  4. Close Windows Explorer

  5. Run VPX and test again.

Hi Tom,

I just tried this aswell and also can't replicate it. I am using Win10 X64 also about 1 year old.

Thanks for the efforts to duplicate this and the workarounds.  I somehow missed the menu option to just delete the Source preview pane if it's not wanted, and that solves my problem.  But, I also got additional feedback from the MAGIX support person who was helping via my bug report support tag, and he said testing on a different W10 PC was able to replicate this! So it seems to be machine dependent and has been forwarded to MAGIX development to find a bug fix.

I also did a system restore, unregistered and uninstalled my VPX, downloaded and re-registered a fresh copy, and am now unable to duplicate this!  Go figure...???

Hi,

Must have been one of those secret Windows features messing things up. Glad to see it resolved, one way or another.

Don't forget to save your different windows settings in VPX. I think my favourite setup is going to be one monitor above the other, unfortunately currently unfeasible.

Hi John,

Do you mean like the attached screen shot? :-)

Hi Roger,

No, I mean like taking my second physical monitor and mounting it on a stand above the first one. I use 2 monitors. Since one is 27" and the other 25", putting one above the other would be too high and block the doors tot he storage space above the first monitor. Maybe I should try adding a third monitor.

Here is one of my 2-monitor settings:

I noticed that you don't use virtual folders under the Import tab. Are you aware of this? When doing several projects or a project with videos and photos in different locations (mine are by date as well), it makes it easy to quickly go from folder to another. Once the project is complete or the folder no longer required, remove the link.

As well, are you using the Project folder at all? If not or you have never seen a use for it, you may want to read up on it in the manual. It can be quite useful in some cases.

Yes, I now have saved a couple of my preferred main program window setups. I will save a lot of "paneful 🙂" juggling of the various window sections depending on what kind of editing I'm doing. Thanks for the tips... I should take the time to go over all the main differences between VPX and MEP16 which I used previously.

Hi John,

I misunderstood what you meant about one monitor above the other, assuming you meant on screen. Yes it would be a bit tricky stacking your monitors without straining your neck to view them. Although I have a second 23" monitor, my main is 42", so I find it really easy to work with the programme and source on the big screen. The second monitor is usually for either the audio mixer or other files that I want information from.

The screen grab I posted was just playing with the monitors above each other on screen, my normal working main monitor screen is below.

I've never used virtual folders so must read up on them. For each new project i download all the clips from each camera into individual camera folders and the same with audio from the audio recorders. I can then click on any of the folders in the import list to see all the clips from a particular camera. I then put all the clips from each camera onto separate time line channels so that I can just drop them into the main channel as I need them. By soloing any particular channel, I can scroll very rapidly through any clips from each camera. As our work is mainly sequential, I find it the fastest way of working by far.
