working w/media from various sources and choosing frame rates

Iris-Willis wrote on 6/10/2025, 2:31 PM

I tried to find this (going through the forum). If it's been discussed, please provide a link to the topic with the answer.

I have a gopro hero 7 set on 30 frs (which I just found out is really 29.97). I also have an iPhone 16pro which can do movies with 30fps (which I think IS really 30). When I import footage from both of these into one movie (which I set on 30), naturally the program alerts me (when I import the gopro stuff) that the frs does not match that of the movie settings.

I can select "change the settings of the movie to match" the gopro footage, but what happens to the iPhone movies then?

So then supposing I get all the footage (from both devices) into the movie program; when I go to export, I am faced with the same question. I just don't know which frs to choose.

TIA

-Iris

@Iris-Willis Hi, I'd decide on the export choice & then set the project to that. It's a complicated matter so I just choose 30fps for mine.

Your phone prob creates variable frame rate videos as my phone does but my GoPro 11 creates constant frame rate videos, however Google says -

The GoPro Hero 7 has both variable and constant frame rates, depending on the chosen setting. When recording in 4K at 60fps, the frame rate is constant. However, when using certain lower resolutions and frame rates, like 1080p at 240fps, the frame rate can be variable.

There's an App called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo.
After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, drag the edges of the window that pops up so it shows all the information & screen capture that page, post that image on here using the arrow button next to the smiley at the top of a new comment 👍

Or Copy & paste the information in a new comment like this -

@Iris-Willis 👍

Post a screen capture or the copy n pasted text of one of your phone videos & one of your GoPro, then someone will give more info, I understand this matter but can't explain it & as I say I don't let it concern me, I don't have problems mixing my phone & GoPro in the same project & I doubt you'll notice any problem.

My videos go to YouTube, when you export from Magix it creates constant videos, Google says -

YouTube prefers consistent frame rates (CFR) over variable frame rates (VFR) when uploading videos. While VFR can be used, YouTube's compression process may introduce artifacts or reduce quality compared to videos with a consistent frame rate. It's generally recommended to maintain the original frame rate during recording and upload
