Title: Mercy!
Artists: NYC GRIFF
Album: MERCY, MERCY, MERCY!

Hi Guys:

"Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" is a song (now considered a Jazz Standard) written by Jazz pianist, Joe Zawinul in 1966 for the great alto saxophonist, Julian Edwin "Cannonball" Adderley for his album, "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! Live at 'The Club'". The song is the title track of the album and became a surprise hit.  "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" went to #2 on the Soul chart and #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Check out Joe Zawinal and his band:

For The Musicians:

The first part of the theme is played two times and is completely made of notes from the major pentatonic scale of the first degree.  The tune is in the key of B-flat major and has a 20-bar structure with four distinct sections. The chord progression is mainly made of dominant-seventh chords on the first, fourth and fifth degrees, giving the song a bluesy feeling; although it does not follow a typical blues progression. In particular, the subdominant (IV) chord in the beginning section emphasizes the bluesy feeling. In the second section, the tonic chord alternates with a second-inversion subdominant chord.

So, here is my interpretation of the tune.  Hope you enjoy...

Griff

hi griff , I am ignorant and do not know music if not a few notes and a few chords, but I have to say that this interpretation I loved and I immediately took the neurons that have just started to get excited and to provoke sweet sensations in me.
thanks for this nice composition. the sounds are beautiful and the stereo effect.

Hey, Griff

You did a fine job of explaining the chord structure of the song so I played along with you (with one ear covered with a headphone and the other listening to your song.). So the IV chord in the second inversion was pivoting on the B flat which gave it a whole different feel, the bluesy feel plus it was very easy to go from the B flat chord to the E flat chord.

I like this song!  Of course I have heard it but you interpretation was exceptional!

Hi!

at this time is 8.30 am in Milan and Italy before heading out to your house listening to this new song.
This is definitely jazz, but this time I am struck by the elegance and cleanliness of sound, a piano very fluid and light.
the result is a song that puts me in a good unore ready for a new day.
to finish I would say that here the musician gives the maximum
great as always

Joe Zawinul is well known to me! From him I also have a CD in the closet! He is a very unusual and complex musician!
Your interpretation pleases me once again very good!

Hi Griff:

Well back in town again!

I love  Zawinal work, specially, of course, the Weather Report era, with the great Pastorious on Bass.

Is solo work i'm not very familiar with except one or two works that i have in here, (in one of him he have a song with a Portuguese singer, Maria João that we already talk about it, Maria João e Mário Laginha, remenber?).

To talk about your interpretation ... well, i've to confess that is becoming increasingly difficult to talk about your songs... i guess i don't have enough adjectives to categorize your playing, and your arrangements!

This is absolutelly amazing, i don't have any idea about what you are talking about when you say that you are playing on the IV, or the VII, or the inversion (god knows what), i don't even know if you are talking english or some kind of alien language, but what i do know is that i'm never tired of hearing what you do!!!

Amazing Work!!!!

All the best, Griff

Great rendition of an old Rock and Roll song by The Buckinghams in about 1967. Thanks for the info on it's history, I did not know it originally was a jazz song, of course Rock and Roll usually gets it's music from elsewhere...lol.        Nice job.
