To the Magix community,

I have had the occasion to visit parts of England recently. This music is a result of the journey, inspiration, new memories, ideas, and interests I have experienced on my visit. In past music I have expressed my interests in early and ancient instruments and the historical beginnings of music. During my journey I had a few days in York and got into the spirit of the Yorkshire region. There still remains there the buildings, structures, tools, musical instruments, and culture the extends back to medieval and renaissance times. In this piece I will feature the ancient and medieval lyre instrument that has been constructed and played so far into past times that it has been named as a constellation in the night sky in many cultures

In York I had the experience to play some notes on a representation of a Viking era lyre at the Viking museum there. Such instruments over the earliest times often had only 7 strings. At the beginning of this song I created a simple ballad using the 7 string lyre (though my own lyre is a 16 string instrument but limited it to the typical 7 string scale that was used in medieval times). Then I came to the modern sounds of Eurodance music that was another inspiration that gave me ideas for the sounds that I used in this song. I also had the opportunity to visit the York Minster cathedral with it's massive cathedral organ and perhaps I will do a piece based on such instruments in my future music.

Hopefully 'Yorkshire' gives my listeners the spirit of adventure and enjoyment I had while in England.

Mark ;)

A Musical Journey Through Time

This evocative piece opens with the delicate strains of an ancient lyre, its scale immediately conjuring images of medieval Yorkshire—a time of quiet reverence and pastoral beauty. The gentle tinkling that follows enhances the sense of nostalgia, inviting the listener into a soundscape steeped in history.

Just as one settles into the past, the composition surprises with a shift into a fast-moving, easy listening section. The transition feels like stepping through time, as a modern lyre takes the lead, gracefully bridging eras before yielding to sweeping strings that carry us into the present.

The final section is a study in reflection: bell-like tones and soft synths create a soothing atmosphere, gently guiding the listener to a contemplative close. It’s a moment to pause, breathe, and take in the emotional arc of the piece.

Altogether, this track is a thought-provoking and mellow journey—one that feels deeply rooted in Yorkshire’s timeless spirit, both then and now. A beautiful sonic postcard from a place rich in memory and meaning.

Thank you for sharing your visit with us.

@Philip-J

Thank you Philip for the notable effort you have contributed to commenting on my song which always gives me the opportunity to share more of my thoughts regarding the making 'Yorkshire' and other songs.

I can say that I did something of a pilgrimage to a place in the world that is a kind of home to me in spirit, heart, and soul. Many things had come together in the history of the region of Yorkshire that is a powerful influence to us in our present times. And this song was not only a journey to a place but also a journey through time.

After returning to my New Mexico USA home and studio I acquired a 16 string lyre instrument to add to my studio resources. I did limit the number of strings used in the recording to the 7 strings that were known in many archeological finds of such instruments. So what did the ancients and medieval bards and musicians actually play on the lyre and how were they tuned? I am sure they used many different scale tunings but some sounds do fit the preferences of our musical ears. Well you just play something ... whatever the influence that we have or the way we want to express ourselves.

Of course I played the lyre exclusively early in the song but throughout the melody there was a a blend of my stringed lyre during some segments, some Magix loops that I felt were fitting, and my own studio synths producing the timbre and harmony of the song. I have also sampled each of the strings of my lyre and added the sample group to my studio sample library to play along with some of my future songs to share if not by hand at times.

Your thoroughly expressed comments are always much appreciated ;)

Mark ;)

Hi Mark, my friend
Your music sounds very pleasant. It's a bit like a journey through different eras, easy to hear at first with just one instrument.
Very nicely done👍👌💯
