    My wife has just purchased a Maginon dual lcd digital camera 8.0 MP but to connect the camera to the pc I have to open the battery compartment so the camera is without power. The lap top does not recognise it as being connected via the USB port.

    I'm not sure if I understand you. Do you have a MIDI keyboard? That's the first thing you should get. M-Audio among others got some decent MIDI keyboards. They're plug&play. Just connect them to your USB port, and they work mostly straight out
