all exports stutter, even without effects

ph1dft wrote on 10/3/2021, 2:18 PM

Dear all,

Here a newby with Magix, used Proshow before but because they stopped I choose for Magix video editing.
I filmed with my Xiaomi MI11 4K video's with this settings (according to Windows 10)
Width = 3840
Height = 2160
Data rate = 61970kbps
Total bitrate = 62066kbps
Frame rate = 30.02 frames/second

I do the editing on a Lenovo Ideapath with 16 GB memory, an I5 processor and an Intel UHD graphics adapter with Movie Edit Pro 22.
The problem is that every movie export I try (mpg-2,avi,HEVC,mp4) with the settings according to the movie, or with lower settings (HD instead of 4K) the movie stutters when playing with VLC or Windows media player. When I play the original file, it is very smooth. The problem is not in Movie editor, but only when the movie is exported with the Magix software.
I am now testing with only a single movie, no effects or what so ever.
For my understanding, I must be able to convert the original mp4 with Movie Edit Pro to the same kind of mp4 file, which also plays smooth??

I tried almost every setting in the menu, but the outcome is still the same, so I am not able to create a smooth looking video file.

Somebody knows what I am doing wrong?

Hi and welcome to the user to user forums.

Most phones are now recording video using variable frame rates which is not a 'standard' recording format for video editors. The files needs to be converted to constant frame rate using something like Handbrake before editing, or if the phone allows in the settings you should change from variable frame rate to constant frame rate recording. Then Movie edit pro can produce a stable playing file.

In addition to @CubeAce comment we need more information:

  1. the processor full model number - ie the rest of the name after i5-

Hi

Thanks for the computer specs.

Did you try converting the Xiaomi MI11 video to Constant Frame Rate (CFR) as advised by @CubeAce? This is most likely the cause of the playback issue for the exports.

There is another potential issue - the Lenovo may struggle with 4K UHD video, the CPU is somewhat low powered for timeline playback (previewing) to be smooth in program.

You can reduce this by turning on Proxy files in the project settings - this will create a new 'proxy' files which are used for the timeline playback only, on export the original video files are used.

Proxy files require more disc space however they use less processor power to play in program giving a smoother playback, depending on effects applied to the video clips you may still get some stuttering when previewing.

Handbrake seems to fix it, at least for my test video.
Difficult to get the right settings for other files, some files grow huges, some files are less MB after converting with the same settings.

I used the proxy files, the problem is after exporting.
I will try some more files, thanks for putting me in the right direction guys!

CubeAce wrote on 10/5/2021, 1:48 PM

@ph1dft

It is generally considered bad practice to mix video types, frame rates and resolutions. While it is possible to do this ,99 times out a hundred, the results are often poor and patchy looking due to the variation in the quality of the original files.

The proxy files are used purely to make the playback smoother and not used for exporting. The original videos are used for that as previously stated by John. If you export using the same amount of bits per frame as the original file then the file will be less in size as exporting will re-compress the original files into a new video without touching the source files.

I would always recommend exporting using the 'Export As' option as this gives greater control over the settings, but it is best to read the manual first to understand which setting does what and how it will effect the quality of the final exported file.

Gday Ray, I can't see any evidence that the OP is doing this?

I assume you mean File>Export Movie>Video As. It looks like the OP is doing that (they mention "mpg-2,avi,HEVC,mp4").

Re your file sizes, do some baseline tests on say 5 minute videos. For example, my MPEG 4 exports at 4000kbps result in a file size of about 30mb per minute. You'll soon get a handle on what bitrates to use for the quality you desire.

I only have 1080 and 4K movies, I will try to combine them and I am not using the proxy files to edit, I use them for
the preview as expected.
I export them from the menu, as indicated via File>Export Movie>Video As MPEG4, for now it seems that the problem is solved by setting a constant framerate of 30 fps.

Thanks again!
