Movie Edit Pro 14 used to do screen capture. Next time I come to use it it wont. Stereomix soundcard is selected. I have a later version but this just crashes my system. Appreciate possible solutions
Please could you read and comply as much as possible with the advice in this post first
We need the details to help you if that is possible to give you help.
I say if that possible to give you help because it sounds like you may be running an older machine using a newer version of Windows than Windows 2000 / XP / Vista / Win 7 / Win8.1
Movie Edit Pro 14 was initially released to support Windows 2000 / XP / Vista but could also just about run on Windows 7 and 8.1. with the 64 bit version of the program.
If you have now updated your computer to Windows 10 (or 11) the audio drivers and possibly graphics drivers have evolved beyond the programs ability to use them.
Your current machine may not however be powerful enough to run the newer version of the program.
Without specific information about programs used, current operating system, and computer specifications it is impossible to give you any meaningful answers or possible solutions.
As well as stereo mix needing to be enabled the program must also have the microphone enabled in Windows 10 permissions. If you are still running an older version of Windows then it could be different problem.
Thanks for this info Ray. I must admit that I dont upgrade unless my computer spec becomes hopeless ie until it wont do what I need it to do. In this case basic video editing and screen capture. This machine and software have been together now for years and it used to work so perhaps it is a nuisance windows fix that settled down months ago and caused my software to no longer be compatible? I attach the spec.
I concur with @CubeAce assessment that Windows 10 and the graphics and/or audio drivers may be the issue. Windows 10 has probably used it's own drivers, which I had issues with when I was using Windows 10 21H1 and had to install the manufacturers drivers.
The specification for your PC is incomplete - you must have a graphics card which is not listed in the image posted above.
In the case of it not doing what you want it to - apart from the error message is it running slow and pausing?
. . . . Your current machine may not however be powerful enough to run the newer version of the program. . . . .
The system is not capable of running any of the more modern versions of Movie Edit Pro (now called Magix Movie Studio), having 4GB of RAM and a 2 core processor it may already be struggling to run Windows 10 and Movie Edit Pro.
The Processor is not multi-thread capable and the motherboard inboard sound chip is probably not going to work properly with the current set of Windows 10 sound drivers. It might work if the program allows you to change to the direct X driver for the sound as Direct X has backwards compatibility built in to a degree. 4GB of ram is not going to be enough to load the newer program with Win 10 either.
The graphics card is also going to be limited to a PCI-Express Gen 2 connection which I fear is not really going to cope with the newer version of MEP either.
The only solution I can think for you is to go back to either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
It's that or a newer machine. Even a second hand tower case with running an Intel gen 7 processor would be cheap to find and capable.
That was the solution by one other member here and I thought a brilliant one. I think he picked up a machine at around £200.
Thanks guys. It is occurring to me that that I need to bite the bullet and get a newer spec. Its teh sheer hassle of transferring email accounts and making a note of all the programs for reinstall. Odd though that it used to do it and now it wont. Cant be teh hardware must be teh drivers/firmware/software. Goes above my head................I work on a "need to know" basis!
I have always kept an old leather Filofax to one side to keep tabs on email addresses, access codes, etc as I go.
All emails from vendors is also in a separate folder and backed up on external hard drives.
It is a major task to rebuild any system and takes me at least two days to get the basics back.
The problem with Windows 10 was it was always going to be an evolving operating system and bears no resemblance to its first release. The same will be true of Windows 11 but probably more so.
There is nothing wrong with running an old computer with an older non supported operating system. You just have to keep it off the net as much as possible.
Of course eventually the machine will die and older software can't keep up with the demands of newer codecs or cameras, phones etc. The problem for most of us is the pace at which this happens is getting quicker all the time and for most users funds are limited. Also the newer tech is now becoming more expensive again rather than cheaper and is more power hungry. So you not only pay more for newer gear but your energy demands increase alongside of that.
All too true. I have converted all family camcorder and movie conversions (50s -90s) to mpeg 2 and stored them both on DVD and 3 external hard drives. Hoping I'm bomb proof!
I'm stubborn and tried to run movie edit 14 in compatibility mode today. The installation program running from my original DVD disc was kind enough to fail because it thought it wasn't the genuine installation disc.
I painted my analogue fence with analogue paint instead so as not to totally write off the day.
