@Robert-McDougle

Hi Robert and welcome to the user to user forums.

There is a vast difference between the way a video editing program and a video playback program handles video files. Within an editor, that file data is handled in chunks and the frame rate for the video is not the same frame rate the audio is recorded at but, the two must remain in sync. So that data is grabbed as needed by the program and then dumped again while the next load of data is being loaded ahead of time ready for the next 'chunk' to be read for playback.

Now, if the system can't grab and drop these chunks of data in time you get glitching of the audio and sometimes the video picture as well. So for the video side of things you can use the 'create proxy file' or reduce the frame rate of the playback so not as much data needs to be processed.

On the audio side of things, in the program settings you can increase (or decrease) the amount of samples or number of buffers used until you get to a point where your system can cope and play the audio without glitches but may result in the program responding more slowly to input commands such as play and stop. The higher your system specs the less you suffer this type of problem.

A better explanation can be found in the program by going to the help section and selecting 'Help' and then scrolling down to the playback section and look at the solution given there.

@CubeAce

I just fired up MEP for the first time in almost a year. I intended to continue editing together scenes from home videos captured quite a while ago. What was working previously has now changed. the avi input files have not changed - MEP was updated. now that I want to use it it is not working as before. It would seem that a codec is missing or changed from my previous settings. I just want to joint the files then export to mp4 as previously was possible.

Within the last year the operating system (including Direct X) has also been updated as have any graphics drivers which would also need updating to keep abreast of the updates in the operating system. Any one of which could be cause for the need to alter some internal settings within the program.

So I would suggest you check both the operating system and graphics drivers for whatever graphics chips / cards you may be running to make sure everything is up to date and therefore runs smoothly together and then check you have sufficient free space on the hard drive for the program to make and use swap files while the program is running. It is also possible that after a year the project folders files have become fragmented. Run the fragmentation tool on the project drive to check. Fragmented files can also cause glitches in playback. Moving a folder from its original location can also cause problems.

If all that is then OK but you still have problems then some of the updates within the program may mean having to adjust the audio buffers as I suggested to rectify the problem. Another possibility is if the hard drive the project resides on has also filled up and there is less free space for files to be moved around on.

You can also try opening Task Manager while the program tries to play the files to see if you have any spikes in any part of the system {such as the hard drives} when a glitch happens or if your motherboard ram is close to being fully used.

If the AVI files are playing at all then the codec is in the system and working.

By 'update', do you mean you have downloaded a patch for your program as opposed to an 'upgrade' which is effectively a new program. A patch such as an 'update' should not make a degrading difference to the program whereas a new version or 'upgrade' may mean your computer is now not as capable of powering the new program, as new program versions are normally written to take advantage of newer components and often run worse on lower powered older systems.

I have given general advice based upon the amount of information you had initially given. There are a hundred and one things it could be but without a detailed account of your system and problem as asked for in this topic at the top of the forum sticky notices, it is hard to give a more precise answer.
