Audio out of memory when importing (Movie Sudio 18)

patrasco wrote on 7/25/2021, 7:29 AM

I get an error message Audio out of memory when importing MTS/MP4 with option auto-create waveform at import. The error message is for both setting 'wave driver' and 'directsound'.

Video and audio are separate tracks. When import is not done with auto-create waveform but by SHIFT+E (create waveform display), there is no error message at playback.

Movie Studio 18 trial. Version 18.1.0.24 (UDC2). Hardware: 8GB RAM with onboard UHD 620 graphics.

Hi and welcome to the user to user forums.

Generating a wav file as a waveform can use an awful lot of additional memory on importing. Try ticking the following in the program setup menu and see if the warning disappears.

If you desperately need to have a full waveform showing you may have to double your physical ram or carry on doing what you are doing to avoid the problem. It is curious the program should behave this way and may be a previously unreported bug. I can reproduce that what you do does increase the amount of ram in use if using a full waveform for the import in Movie Edit Pro 2021 which is what your program is based on.

I tried various combinations in MEP2021 and cannot reproduce the problem. I don't have MMS18 so I can't really test this. Also, MMS is at 18.1.0... whereas as MEP2021 is at 20.0.1.80. I wondering if MMS18 is not based on MEP2019.

As Ray mentioned, try the same sequence with half waveform on. Use the wave driver.

What are you getting as the default for the buffers? I have:

  • Buffer number: 4
  • Multitrack size: 16348
  • Preview size: 4096

It may be that you've found a bug.

Hi John.

Have task manager in use while seeing the difference in the amount of ram loaded between selecting to have half the waveform showing to having a full waveform showing. I am not getting the running out of memory warning as I have much more ram but I do see a big increase in the amount of motherboard ram loaded between the two settings. I assume as the two programs are basically the same they would behave similarly.

I don't have to have as many buffers set as you using only two but the sample sizes are larger at 16348 for preview to try to keep latency on playback shorter. The differences on playback latency may be down to the speed of the motherboard ram as much as buffer numbers and sample sizes used for playback.

I do think this may well be a bug or oversight not seen by us due to most of us having more ram.

Ray.
