nirvanray wrote on 6/1/2015, 4:33 AM

Dear friends,

I will be making a 30-second commercial for a client of mine that he intends to put the same in the threatre halls of the city.

Can someone please guide me what camera to use for a high-resolution picture quality ? Is Canon 5D Mark II sufficient?

And also the second qestion is what format must I export the movie into? Is mpeg4 or Quicktime fine or theatre halls have some other formats?

And finally what must be the DB level of my audio during shootinng (With Zoom HN5) and editing (With MEF 18)?

Kindly suggest.

Regards.

Hi Anirban

This is one where you definitely need to get your client to specify their requirements regarding file format, resolution, sound format and levels required for theatre projection.

At commercial theatre projection level, I would be using a Pro video camera which has much more control over the video then the Canon 5D, eg Sony XDCAM, NXCAM / AVCHD, and HD / DVCAM series video cameras.

Dear John thanks for your kind comments.

My client is a hardcore businessman but has least idea of film-making and the technical stuff.

So you suggest not to opt for 5D.

And can you kindly suggest me which format to export the film to for an excellent resolution?

Regards.

Hi Anirban

. . . . So you suggest not to opt for 5D . . . .

That depends greatly on the amount of control you need at the shooting stage - Pro cameras have much greater control over colour balance, white point, gamma, peak white and black settings etc.

. . . . can you kindly suggest me which format to export the film to for an excellent resolution? . . . .

This is difficult to advise because you need to know what formats and resolutions the theatres can handle.

As an example a theatre that has DCI equipment may require Media Exchange Format files (.mxf) for the video and audio as well as .xml files that contain "metadata" about the files in the package.  MEP cannot export mxf files.

These files may distributed on removable hard drives, USB flash drives or other digital means, they also usually have a maximum resolution of 4096 or 2048 pixels horizontally.

Dear John,

@ Camera: It is clear that: To use a pro camera instead of 5D. (Though bit disapponting because I am now totally into this DSLR breed and a blind lover).

@ Format: Clear that I must export to .xml. However as you said that MEP cannot do it. So any options please?

Kindly suggest.

Regards.
