Can't capture video after upgrade - file empty

konjurer wrote on 12/26/2019, 1:45 PM

Trying to capture some old video from by Hi8 camera after upgrading to MEP 2020. First, I'm really confused about the upgrade... nowhere does it tell me that I'm on version 2020 after the upgrade. My current version is 19.0.2.49. Is this MEP 2020?

So I've used my USB capture device in the past with no problems. I used to have a Magix brand one (VHS to DVD Rescue product) but it quit working a few years ago. Now I have a cheap capture device but it has been working fine before the upgrade. Here are the steps I am taking to record video:

  • I hit record and select Analog
  • The inputs for audio and video are both AV TO USB2.0
  • The Video Dialog show the video playing and I can hear the audio just fine but it gives me a warning that the audio levels are too low.
  • I click the red record button and it appears that it is recording
  • I click the white button to stop recording and it shows me a Recording Duration: XX minutes but Video Capture: 0 MB
  • If I click the OK button it tells me that the .mpg file is empty

Any ideas as to what is going wrong? Thanks!

Hi.

First, your version of MEP is the latest, so no problem there!

As to why you are seeing the problem of the empty file, I'm honestly not sure! But have you tried saving the capture to a different folder or, better still if you can, to a different drive?

Thanks. I tried another drive even thought space doesn't seem to be an issue on either device. Here is the specific error I get when clicking OK after attempting to capture video.

Error 0x1000: no streams found during init

Hi, thanks for the additional info.

I can't check this on my machine because I don't have a comparable USB capture device but is there an alternative setting under "Recording Quality" that you could try? If it's available .avi is usually pretty trouble-free! I do quite regularly transfer analogue VHS to digital video, using a dedicated internal capture card, and always output to .avi. Resulting files can be very large but MEP/VPX has no problem reading and playing them.

Hi

In Program settings, Import/Export what setting is the Codec option displaying?

Do you have any 'All in One' codec packs, eg K-Lite or equivalents, installed - if yes this may be the issue - they can mess up the codecs that MEP uses and are not necessary.

I see from your image of the Record pane, that the Preset is MPEG - user defined the values I can see for this option are the Standard settings, however 'User defined' suggests that something has been changed in the Advanced option - has anything been changed in the advanced settings and if so what?

Tried other output formats but it did not work. I'm pretty sure I did not change anything in the Advanced Settings and included a screen shot of that screen.

Also tried to run the program "As Administrator" in case there was some weird permission issue but that did not work.

Very strange... I don't think I'm doing anything different than in the past. I haven't really used the capture device for a few months but the only thing that I know has changed since the last time I used this device is the updated MEP version.

BTW... the device came with some video capture software and that software has no problem capturing the video so again, it leads me to believe that that issue is on the MEP side.

I've never installed codecs directly. I don't think I've changed anything in the Advanced Options. I know very little about codecs or advanced settings so I try to avoid touching anything like that.

Thanks for all of your help guys!

Hi

You have not answered my first question - 'In Program settings, Import/Export what setting is the Codec option displaying' ?

What is the device name and the Capture software that came with it?

Is the capture software installed in the c:\Program Files (x86) folder?

You can find this by either:

  1. For a shortcut to it on your desktop

Right click it and select Properties, Shortcut tab - the Target and/or the Start in options will start with the drive and folder the program is installed in.

  2. No desktop shortcut

Click the Windows button, locate the program in the start menu and right click it, select More, Open file location - this will open File Explorer with the shortcut displayed then do as for item 1.

John,

Here is a screen grab of the Program Settings. All of the options are selected.

The capture device is from Redco I bought off Amazon. Still for sale... a cheap, Chinese device but it has worked well in the past with MEP. The software that came with the device is called VHS to DVD 3.0 by Honestech. Really basic but it does work. I think the capture quality in MEP is better which is why I would like to see it working again.

Capture software is in the c:\Program Files (x86) folder and the executable is HTPA.exe.

Thanks for all of you help!

@konjurer

Hi Tim

The Redco device drivers installed will be 32 bit drivers which MEP cannot use as it is a 64 bit program.

If you cannot get 64 bit drivers for the Redco, I would advise you get a good branded USB video capture device such as one of the Terratec or Happauge ranges.
