Cannot Burn Playable Disc

Arthur-LW wrote on 6/10/2012, 12:49 PM

Using an LG BH14NS40 BD burner with supplied firmware update installed.  I've made several attempts to burn a project having an m2ts file onto a standard Verbatim BD-R disc.  The software runs a data check at the end and tells me the burn was succesful, but I cannot play the disc on my Toshiba BDX2000 stand-alone Blu-ray player.  I get menu sound but no video.  If I press Play the movie appears to start and appears on screen, but only runs a couple of seconds and then loops back to the menu sound.

If I attempt to play the disc on the 'puter I can at least see the menu visible, but clicking on the Play button does the same thing as the Toshiba:  a few seconds of the movie start and then back to the menu.  Help somebody!  LOL

System info:  Windows 7 Professional x64, Core i5-760 Quad-Core, 8 gigs RAM

Hi

Check the burn speed used by MEP - it may be too fast resulting in 'smearing' of the data on the disc.  I always select at least 2 speeds lower then the max speed of the writer.

For example if the writer max speed is 16x and has options for 12x, 8x ,6x and 4x then I would select 8x.

Also, if you have not done so and you are using MEP17, update your burn routines with those available here http://support2.magix.com/customer/en/download/tools

Well, the email confirmation says it's "MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 18 MX Plus", but there is no way of verifying that in the software itself.  In the Aboiut window it just says,

"MAGIX Movie Edit Pro MX Plus Download Version

Version 11.0.5.0 (UDC2)

But if at the time of the email (May 25) they were only putting out links to MEP18 then I should be ok, right?

About my burener, it is rated for 14x, but the Verbatim discs (PN: 97339) are only rated for 6x.  This brings up something that perhaps should have bothered me before but I passed it up.  MEP recognizes my burner and shows: F: HL-DT-ST BD-RE BH14NS40 as a selection.  No problem there.  However, the software gives me choices of 3x, 4x, 5x, 7x, and 8x.  I was wondering why it would seemingly allow for a speed greater than the loaded disc can support.  Anyway, if I'm hearing you right, then I should opt for 4x instead of 5x like I was doing?

Another question:  The first choice in the burn list is Image recorder.  Is this a burn to the HDD in Blu-ray format, kinda like the old .iso and .vob files that one uses for DVDs?  And can I save the Image recorder output to disc and burn it with Nero?

Appreciate the help, John.

Actually come to think of it, I had learned the hard way to never burn anything in DVD format on the fly with MPEG Video Wizard, but would always save to hard drsk first, then later burn the saved compilation with Nero.  That worked like a charm before, and now I'm guessing it would still be good practice today.  Am I wrong?

Hi
Movie Edit Pro MX is version 18 and you are patched to the latest version 11.0.5.0 (UDC2).

Interesting that the burner is offering 7x and 8x - with a 6x disc in it should not offer anything faster than the disc is rated for.

The 6x rating of the disc is the absolute maximum for reliable writing, as determined by the disc manufacturers, however a lot depends on the quality of the BD discs.

I do not consider this to be a consistent value to use, this is why I recommend using a lower write speed, in your case I would go for the 4x setting.

The image recorder does indeed create an iso image of the disc and no you are not wrong.  I use this method or rewriteable discs for testing - to load the iso I use MagicIso Virtual CD/DVD manager - also, if I know I am going to burn many copies of the same disc, I use an iso image rather than disc copy - both with Nero.

Note to John  (et al):

Update:  Success, but with a problem still, and further info.

Taking the burn job away and giving it to Nero was the way to go.  Nero even identified my disc as writable at 12x, even though  on Verbatim's own label it said the disc was 6x.  Burning wiht my eqpt. and the aforementioned BD-R disc produced a fine-looking movie.

But.....  Still one problem.  The animated menu was not visible.  Just the sound got included in the compilation, and even the sound was intermittent, and also had a pop that repeated every few seconds.

I recaptured the movie in mp4, and I have no idea if this solved some of my issues.  Does MEP not like .m2ts and .ts?  Anyway, this time I was able to save an image with Image Recorder that Nero could take and run with... apart from the animated menu (I used the User Defined - User Footage - Warm Pan one.

Any help?

Hi

. . . . Does MEP not like .m2ts and .ts? . . .

Yes it does - I regularly work with these from my HD camera and HD satellite receiver and never (touch wood) have had a problem - also no problem with HD MOV files from my sportscam

The problem may be due to the codecs inside the m2ts and mt files - they are container files and can have a variety of codecs inside them.

The files are encoded as folows:

m2ts            AVC encoded for video and AC3 for audio - surround sound 5.1

TS files        h.264 for video and AC3 for audio - surround sound 5.1

MOV             AVC for video and AAC for audio (stereo)

As you can this covers several different combinations of HD video.

You can analyse your video using GSpot or MediaInfo to see what is inside them.

Gspot will also tell you which codecs are installed on your computer and whether the video can be played and which codecs are used - the buttons under MS A/V bottom left of the GSpot window

Yes it does - John

Yes of course it does.  I was awfully green back then.

And my Hauppauge HD PVR capture device uses m2ts as the default mode.

(As it turned out it was the animated menu template that was buggy, not Magix' imagined aversion to HD stuff.)

(P.S.  This one became active because I corrected a typo - way too much time on my hands  LOL.)
