Cannot load latest version

Smithgor wrote on 12/5/2020, 11:13 PM

Hi,

I raised and cancelled an earlier card this weekend because I had an issue getting collage, etc effects. In the process of overcoming this I believe I downloaded a second (older) version of Movie edit pro. I now have 2 copies of the program on my PC:-

1) A working version in folder C/Program Files/MAGIX/Movie Edit Pro Plus/2017. The main Application file, Videodeluxe, is 15/08/2016

This loads and I have installed extra content however the functionality is not the latest (eg cannot identify favourite collages), no inching wheel.

2) A newer version in folder D/Program Files (Downloads)/MAGIX/Movie Edit Pro Plus/2018. The main Application file, Videodeluxe, is 11/12/2017. This version fails to load and I get a message to this effect.

I have tried renaming the folders 'MAGIX old' and moving folders to recycle bin in an attempt to force a new installation but only get repair or add features type options.

Please advise how I can get the latest version of the program to load correctly.

Thank you

Hi, and welcome to the Movie Edit Pro user to user forum.

If you raised an earlier question it is not showing up on this site. Possibly because you cancelled it before pushing the comment button.

Quite often in these circumstances it seems that you need to completely remove all traces of both installations of both programs before reloading either ,as on a normal install files and shared dynamic library links (dll, files) get left behind and cause problems when the programs are reinstalled. That often means a manual windows search or using a tool to hunt the files down. The files are left behind deliberately as often if another program also needs them to function and they are removed other problems can occur further down the line.

These are quite old versions of MEP so I'm assuming you are either still using Win 7 or 8.

Ray.

@Smithgor

As Ray says, if you wish to uninstall any Magix program in order to later reinstall, it is essential that ALL traces of the former installation are completely removed.

However, can we take a step backwards? Can you first tell us a lot more about your computer, its operating system, hardware etc? This post will show you the level of detail we need.

Then, can you tell us exactly which version and variant of MEP you had when the problems started appearing. You mention in your post both the 2017 and 2018 versions; did you initially install the earlier and then later do the update/upgrade to the later? I ask because I think both these versions come under the current Magix policy with regard to Updates/Upgrades, specifically that any purchase gives 12 months of updates or upgrades, measured from the date of purchase. At the conclusion of the 12 months the user has the option to extend, or not, that service for an additional 12 months. There is no compulsion to extend the subscription, but no further updates or upgrades will be possible.

BUT, and this is the problem that has caught a number of users out, if you choose to not extend the Update Service and you later need to reinstall the software for any reason, it will revert to the version that you originally bought, i.e. you may not be able to download any update patches that were released after you purchased that specific version and I'm almost 100% certain you will not be able to upgrade to a later version, even if you had that upgraded version on your computer when the uninstall/reinstall became necessary.

When we have all this information from you we may be able to suggest a route to resolving the problem - it may well be that total uninstall and subsequent reinstall is your only option - but given the caveats with the Update Service it might be possible to avoid that potentially problematic route.

Thank you for taking the trouble to reply to my post.

I've spent an hour replying comprehensively then found the page had timed out!

Long story short I tried an update, after thinking about your comment. 2 updates later things have changed (not got the favourites feature I wanted) so I'm going to leave it alone and get on with my project.

Thanks again
