Clip audio has forced fade over entire clip, missing handles

FunkyB wrote on 5/2/2020, 3:23 AM

Occasionally, I'm having this issue where the audio (on separate track from video of the same source file) gets a forced gradual fade out over the duration of the clip. It is visible with the white volume line and "MUTE" and "Volume" are displayed above the waveform before and after the filename.

I cannot adjust the clip volume as the handles are missing. Reset Audio Effects doesn't do anything. The problem is the "clip curve" (?) (usually for adjusting the overall volume and fade in/fade out), not the green volume curve, nor the track curve. It only affects that given clip. Deleting it and re-importing from the source is the only way I've found to get rid of it. Nothing is shown active under Effects, either. Please see the screenshot.

I feel like I must have mis-clicked on something, but I can't figure it out. Can anyone help? My computer is getting old and I'm going to get a new one soon, but I've made many videos with MEP on it with no problem, so I don't think that's the issue.

Hi Funky.

Sorry it's taken someone here so long to reply.

The handle is not missing. It will be on the left had side of the audio clip and needs dragging to the right.

Ray.

Hi,

This is usually created by a bug in that version when you move objects around passing over another object. The object moved ends up with a total fade that cannot be removed by dragging the handle because the handle disappears.

Right-click on the object, select the Object Trimmer or Shift+N and adjust the fading in length by clicking on the left button. As soon as you do this, the fade handle becomes visible. Click on OK, not cancel. Then you can move the fade handle. Alternatively, run it back to 0 in the Object Trimmer.

Clicking the left button for Fade In time in the object trimmer did the trick. I had to select Show Audio and Video on One Track (not split) before the button would work. Thanks!

Hi

. . . . I had to select Show Audio and Video on One Track (not split) before the button would work. . . . .

This is a known bug in MEP - occasionally clicking the adjust buttons in the Object trimmer do not work on the selected object.

However of you close the Object trimmer and then click on one of the fade handles on the clip - they do not have to be moved - the buttons then start working when you re-open the Object trimmer.

@browj2

Hi John

We reported this bug some time ago - it now looks like the exact cause is the Object trimmer focus is not correct on opening when this occurs as just clicking on the fade handle enables the Object trimmer to work correctly - can you confirm this next time it happens to you.

I couldn't completely figure out how I got it to work until I read this.

The fade handles on the audio track of clip had disappeared, so I couldn't click on them, and therefore couldn't use the Object trimmer to bring them back. Catch-22. However, when I selected Video/Audio on one track, the handles on the video portion were active and it was after dragging the fade in handle there that the button in the Object trimmer became responsive.

Knowing that, it's not hard to deal with but otherwise it's really confusing!

Hi

I cannot replicate the none appearance of the video handles when video/audio are on separate tracks.

Can you confirm that what you are saying is the handles of the video part did not appear when the mouse pointer is over the video portion of the clip.

The handles of the video part are there, even when they are missing on the audio part. However, even after I dragged the fade in handle on the video part (that was the first thing I tried), the trimmer button seemed inactive when I then selected the audio part and tried to adjust it.

Nothing I did seemed to make the trimmer button work on the audio part (when then handles were missing) until I showed Audio and Video on one track, selected the combined object, and used the Trimmer's Fade in button on it. After that I selected to show the video and audio separately again, and the audio track's handles worked again.
