Color background Images

holland_derrick wrote on 1/1/2021, 9:39 PM

Since updating my program, I can no longer find the background images that come in several different color options. I think they may have been called "Test Images", but not sure. Basically, I just want to have a background with the color of my choosing, at the beginning of my video, that I can place a text description of the movie. Can anyone give me simple step-by-step instructions on how to find these again? Thank you.

Hi,

Did you download and install the extra content?

That said, I'm not sure that they are still included. I think that I have copied mine over from previous versions.

You can always use a graphics program and make your own, 1920x1080, with more colours than those that were available.

Hi John.

They come with MEP 2021. I'm not in the habit of copying things across from previous versions and my earlier copies of the program no longer exits as it was a clean install at the time. They are relatively small resolution files.

Hi

For a more versatile method of choosing the background colour on a Title or any other video or image object:

Right click the object in the timeline

Select Background Design, Background Design

Click the colour patch indicated in the image below and you can select/create any colour you wish.

If you want the same background on multiple objects, you can copy and paste the effect to other objects

I just tried this, but no "Test Images" is listed. It only lists the following: Borders, Comic, Deco, Full, Fun, Mix, Present, Text, and Layer Masks. And none of those are giving me what I'm looking for.

I don't get it...I've always had them available before, I installed the update 2 days ago.

Hello. I can't really tell this is doing anything, as I cannot see where the color is being applied.

I actually do not want it on any video in the project. I want to place a colored background before the actual videos play, and I want to be able to place scrolling text on the colored background, basically giving a description/summary of what is in the movie. I have always been able to do this in the past.

Please see the first few seconds of the following video, and the orange background with the text. This was created in Magix, and this is what I now cannot find.

Which version of Movie Edit Pro did you buy? The Base Movie Edit Pro does not contain any effects masks which I'm assuming are the missing Items.

John EB will correct me if I'm wrong.

Actually Johns suggestion of Select Background Design, Background Design and clicking the colour patch to choose a colour after adding titles to the resulting clip may work better. A neat trick I have never thought of doing.

Hi Ray,

I’m using my iPad at the moment so can’t check, but I don’t think masks are involved, Just solid rectangles and a few other ‘test images’. But all that’s needed to do what the OP wants is to either use the built-in menu items John recommended or a minute or so in an image editor to make a suitably sized rectangle of the preferred colour. I have a set of a dozen or so made up for quick import.

Please understand that I am not the most knowledgeable person on this type of thing. I am sure my program does numerous things I will never need, or even be aware it does. I have tried John's suggestion, and I can find how to do what he suggested. However, when I do it, nothing happens. And it also seems that I have to select an actual video file in the track, to place the color over. But again, nothing happens. And I don't want it over a video file. I want it BEFORE the video files, sort of as an introduction to the video. It has always been available before, but I cannot find it now.

And I tried John's suggestion, and as I said, nothing happens. I mean, its a great suggestion and he even was kind enough to demonstrate it for me. But it simply isn't doing anything. And I also pointed out that it seems I have to actually select a video file in the track, to impose the color background on...Not sure why I would even want to do that. Again, I want the colored background separate from the video files.

That leaves your suggestion. Perhaps I am just not familiar enough with all the many aspects of the program, to know what you mean by "in an image editor". How do I find the image editor in the Magix program?

Where else would you put the background?! But my suggestion to simply import a solid image is even easier.

”in an image editor". How do I find the image editor in the Magix program?

MEP is a video editor. Programs like Windows Paint (built in to all Windows versions), or IrfanView, Paintshop Pro, etc are image editors. Or, although it wouldn’t be my choice, you could use Magix’s own program, Photo Editor.

Have you never used one?

I just tried JohnEBs suggestion and it works well (MEP 2020 here).

Create your title on the timeline first.

Then RC the title object

Choose Background Design> Background Design

You will be presented with a box to select whatever colour you want.

In MEP 2020 Premium, there is no "test Images" in the Image Objects section. Perhaps Magix has removed them in favour of John EB's method.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

No, I have never used any of the ones you named. As I said, I am not the most knowledgeable or experienced in this area. I mainly make home movies of my family vacations, and just want them to look decent.

Also, you ask where else would I put the background, but over a video file? I am still trying to figure why I would ever WANT to put a color background over my video. Like I explained previously, I wanted a color background to show up BEFORE the video files play, so that I could impose text onto the background as an intro to the video. I did get John's suggestion to work, after I was advised to do the title before adding the videos. Thank you for your assistance.

Glad it's working for you. I must admit I am scratching my head, too, about a background to a video. I suppose if you had set up a transparent area on one video and wanted to display something else in that area you could use the Background Design feature, but that's getting into the advanced area for me. 🙂

I suppose if you had set up a transparent area on one video and wanted to display something else in that area you could use the Background Design feature, but that's getting into the advanced area for me. 🙂

Exactly. And thank you again for your help, and to all who offered suggestions.

Sorry for any confusion. I wrongly interpreted you as being surprised that the background must initially be placed at a lower level (e.g. track 1 or 2) than the video.

Pleased you now have the recommended method sorted. Try my alternative intuitive method too. Just as you’d drag a photo onto the timeline, drag your solid image. Make it (or a set) in Paint or one of the many others available. Sooner or later I reckon you’ll need an image editor!
