compressing videos with Magix Movie Edit Pro using mpeg format

I seen a similar question asked but when converting to wmv format.  I'm trying to convert to mpg format.  My data bitrate no matter what I set it at wants to stay at 9000kbps which makes my file too big.  I want it to be less than that like around 4000kbps or so, but it won't convert to that.  I read about converting to an mp4 file instead which does what I want, however the mp4 file won't play on my dvd player but the mpg file will.  What can I do to get the mpg file to convert at the bitrate I ask it to?

thanks,

Hi

If you are using a DVD player are you burning the movie to DVD using MEP Burn options and selecting DVD and a menu template?

If yes and the movie is less than 2 hours long then there is no need to adjust the preset bitrate for the disc. If the movie is greater than 2 hours long, eg 2 - 2 1/2 hrs,  MEP will ask you if you want to adjust the bitrate - either manually or automatically - there is a limit to how low you can adjust the bitrate and maintain decent quality so trying to get for example a 3 hour movie on a DVD may be impossible.

If you are exporting as a mpg and then burning the file to disc with no menus etc - I would have to ask why?

What I'm doing is exporting the video to a file and than I would later burn the compressed file to dvd when someone wants a copy.  It isn't necessary to burn it straight to dvd after compressing the file for the project I'm doing.  but mp4 files will play sound just not video on a dvd player even though they play fine on my computer.  what can I do to get my mpg file formatted file to convert to the bitrate I set it at and not 9000kbps?  if it will not burn at a set bitrate than why give the option to change the bitrate?

thanks,
