Considering buying Video Pro X

Gid wrote on 4/28/2022, 7:00 PM

Hi, I know this should maybe be in the Pro X category but I've MEP Premium n a few of you know me so i'd prefer to get comments from here, 👍

I'm well impressed with MEP at the moment, i'm exporting 25min 4k in about 6mins 🤸‍♂️🤸‍♂️🤸‍♂️😊👍

But MEP is limited reg my Boris plugins,

would i gain anything moving to Pro X reg my plugins & does it have the same export engine/times?

Thanks.

Hi Gid.

You should have got VPX 12 from Humble Bundle while you could for £20 and then got the upgrade for less and you would have found out for cheaper 🤣👍.

Seriously though I have doubts that the Boris effects won't work in VPX if they are not working or haven't already been made available in MEP.

Any effect I have that works in MEP I found already ported and working into VPX and Vegas 16 when I opened them after installing the programs. If they are not appearing in MEP or working I very much doubt they will appear or work in VPX.

VPX has the full blown Infusion engine, meaning it makes better use of any nvidia card for smoother playback as well as two monitors within the program. The second monitor can be used as a before and after screen to see the difference an effect has made or to bring up monitoring tools such as histograms or RGB graphs which someone like John brown will make use of but personally I don't use for that, much preferring to judge such things with my eyesight. Some tools like colour correction have more fine adjustment tools within them that are easier and more accurate to use, such as the colour grading tools and tone contrast controls.

All content supplied within the program (Mainly the music tracks and not including third party effect contents) is available for commercial use (unlike MEP) although it may not be royalty free and may still result in a copyright strike at YouTube. VPX is supposed to be faster rendering with some export formats than MEP although because I am running VPX 12 and MEP 2022 I can't personally confirm that as MEP 2022 seems equally fast to me.

By the way, you never gave feedback on the memory tests you conducted so I'm assuming it was not that great a difference.

Thanks for that, yeah missed the humble stuff, & yeah it sounds as expected, none of Boris stuff is officially supported by Magix line of editors so i sort of didn't expect them to be any better in VPX, the dual screen thing isn't my sort of thing, I video my clips, sort them by date in their folder, then add to the timeline & edit there, sometimes when i'm explaining my vids i might use the audio from the start of a clip but the video from the latter part or vice versa, i can't point the camera & think about what i'm saying without talking b*llocks 😂🙊 I thought it was the same Infusion engine in Premium? it's plenty fast enough for me, I don't put music in my vids, partly because that can be a personal taste but also because of YT's copyright, i just can't be dealing with it, + most of my vids need true sound, I reduce the volume of load tools but you need to hear the sound of the machines to know what they're doing, ,

The 3200hz memory is still in it's package on my desk, i still have the 8 x 2666hz in the machine i've been editing a lot recently n need the PC working as is, 12 x 20min-ish vids since the 19th, 😂👍

Thanks Ray 👍

Hi Gid.

When you are using Vegas with the effects you say you have trouble with do you ever open Task Manager to see if there are any component stresses anywhere?

What is showing the most activity or highest data rates?

Given the current partnership between Magix and Boris FX, you can ask Magix to push Boris to add VPX/MEP support ( But I might be pessimistic, because the MEP/VPX audience doesn't seem to be very large. ) ;

Or you can ask Magix to deploy the Infusion Engine in Vegas ( just a hypothesis. I don't know if it's technically possible ) .

Both solutions seem to be able to solve your problem.

According to some users a long time ago (I can't find the original text now) : The high performance of MEP/VPX is limited to built-in FX and operations. Once you add some OFX, they actually process OFX many times slower than Vegas Pro. So, the best way to do this is to download the VPX trial and test it with some BCC FX.

Hi

. . . . According to some users a long time ago (I can't find the original text now) : The high performance of MEP/VPX is limited to built-in FX and operations Once you add some OFX, they actually process OFX many times slower. . . . .

Depending on how long ago, ie more than 6 years, MEP/VPX did not support OFX plug-ins.

Additionally they also did not support NVENC encoding, the older engine performance relied an the Intel iGPU which was not particularly well supported by some of the plug-in manufacturers. Nvidia dropped the NVCUVENC (CUDA) encoding in favour of NVENC back in 2014.

The Infusion engine in both MEP/MMS/VPX brought back Nvidia NVENC encoding.

As @Gid has remarked in other posts, and I agree with, MEP/MMS/VPX are now faster exporting than Vegas Pro with like for like projects.

With respect to the Boris Effects they are, IMHO slow, depending on which particular effect you are creating in Vegas Pro and MEP/MMS/VPX.

Gid:

VPX has professional features such as the Scopes, different colour space encoding, and Broadcast standards features to ensure the export meets the needs of video for TV.

@browj2 has a list of differences somewhere in the forum.

Hi,

Since you have both MEP and Vegas, I'm quite sure that you are aware of many of the difference between the two. Look at the Comparison table for MEP/MS with VPX to see the rest.

I use VPX because of its additional features like the scopes, Project Temp Folder, Source Monitor, free movement of audio clips, multi-language capability for DVD/BR's, better Brightness/Contrast tools, better Colour Correction tools and more.

The engine is the same.

VPX was and still is a disaster as far as I am concerned. I get a lot of crashes, disappearing preview of some objects, video clips that work in one project but not another, etc. Magix still has not corrected many of the bugs that were on my old bug list, and in fact have made some even worse: Hitfilm plugins XY cannot be properly keyframed, interface with Xara - raises an error and XAR objects are emptied upon reopening a project, and more.

I suggest that you wait until VPX 14 is released, probably some time in June, as VPX13 was released on June 21, 2021. Hopefully, they will have fixed a few more things and not broken too many others.

@Nalmcruto yeah that would good, but I've discussed MEP with Boris but unfortunately MEP doesn't have the infrastructure (or whatever it's called) to support the plugins, they actually seemed surprised they showed in MEP at all. Vegas adding the infusion engine would be a great boost but apparently Gary said it would require Vegas being rewritten, Magix money input & Vegas team members is lacking in both regards, Vegas it seems is old software that they're patching to try to keep up. it'll either become obsolete as people drift away or one day it'll get a total revamp,

@CubeAce @johnebaker @browj2 yeah i think i'll hang on but even then i might get VPX just because.... 😂 i'll buy as a separate licence rather than an upgrade, I like MEP n don't want to rock the boat. Many of the things like scopes etc i don't use, my YT subs don't mention or notice any problem & i don't understand some of that anyway, maybe one day 👴😏 , i only use basic lighting that's in MEP & most basic effects like that, Boris or Vegas are ok in Vegas, Project window - I have two screens & just drag n drop, The main one i'm interested in, doesn't work at all in MEP & the one that slows Vegas to a crawl is Mocha Pro, It's the reason i got Vegas so i could track my number plate in my vids to obscure it in my YT vids, we on this forum discussed Xara, i tried it, it was ok but that wasn't for me so i blame one of you 3 for mentioning Boris & Mocha in that thread ages ago, I'm now a few £k lighter 😂👍 playback & render is slow with that added in Vegas but i got Mocha Pro Standalone, that has a decent render engine & for the small bits i do i manage ok, or i can export from the Mocha plugin a B/W mask, remove Mocha from the timeline & add the mask, playback is good then, (I can add that B/W mask to MEP too 👍) In an ideal world i'd have the playback performance & export power of MEP + the extras that come with Vegas.

I'm using MEP now for 90% of my basic editing, exporting a 25min 4k vid in 6mins has meant i can export whilst making a cuppa after a long editing session, then sit down & watch it through before uploading, i've managed 12 x 20min+ vids uploaded to YT since the 19th, 🤸‍♂️🤸‍♂️😁👍

Thanks again 👍👍😊

btw, just to mention & if you didn't know, a lot of the Boris effects inc either Mocha tracking for things like lens flares etc, or they have Mocha masking/Pixelchooser that is a simpler version of mocha for tracking & masking areas that you don't want the fx to be applied, as with Mocha Pro this feature doesn't work in the Boris plugins that show in MEP.

Hi,

I failed to mention that the content that comes with VPX (same content as MEP) comes with a commercial use license, so you don't need to worry about copyright.

Also, VPX uses the Samplitude audio engine, MEP does not.

You qualify for an upgrade to VPX, I believe. You will get a separate serial number and MEP will not be touched as they are separate programs. In the future, you can upgrade one or the other or both.

I think ever since i got MEP i've only ever added music once to a vid, many yrs ago, this one

Hi Gid, Vegas' Boris FX can also work in Resolve. Why don't you try Resolve?

Reyfox wrote on 5/3/2022, 12:08 PM

@Gid I have VPX12, the Humble Bundle. The BorisFX do appear as they do in MEP2022. But trying Title Studio for instance, doesn't work well. Neither does playback of the clip with the title on it and it eventually crashed.

in MEP 2022, BCC+ Film Stocks when selecting FX Browser, nothing happens. It's a "hit or miss" if an effect opens and works properly.

Boris works better in Vegas and Resolve. I have Resolve Studio, so don't know about the free version if it supports OFX plugins.

@Reyfox Hi, yep Boris shows in the free resolve, but as i wrote above i just don't like the layout, timeline etc, I've Hitfilm pro which i don't like the timeline either, I've had MEP since 2004, i like that i can just add a file, drag it to create a crossfade, add a transition if i want, In Hitfilm & Resolve the in built transitions apply across two events no prob but some of the Boris ones seem to only want to apply to one event, I might be doing it wrong but basically i'm just a grumpy old git who doesn't want to spend time on something i don't like, I have V Post so i have V Effects if i want to do composite shots etc, , I think i was hoping that VPX was similar to MEP but one step closer to Vegas regarding the plugins compatibility, I wonder if Vegas & MEP will ever mate, that offspring could be good, 😂

@Gid most of my editing is in Vegas. I'll "farm" out to other editing software I have, work that they do best. As for Resolve, yeah... it takes some getting used to. Especially when you are working on the timeline. I do like everything in front of me instead of switching to different pages. HFP is another "kettle of fish". It works... but I have no idea of it's future.

browj2 wrote on 5/25/2022, 10:17 PM

@Nalmcruto @Gid

Hi,

I suggest waiting. Magix introduced some new undocumented features that need sorting out. They have also retained the bugs remaining from VPX13. Of course, maybe you would like to help out identifying and reporting bugs.

On the plus side, scrolling along the timeline is a new experience as it is amazingly smooth and fast in the Preview Monitor. Playback, on the other hand, has not improved, nor has export time, at least for me on my fancy new computer. I just updated the graphics drivers and haven't tried exporting with them. Using NVIDIA gaming drivers, not studio drivers.

Also, Magix included some welcome new controls for Size/Position/Rotation to quickly select one of the 4 corners or centres for Positon and Anchor Points. Still no zoom slider.

There is no comparison between the release of VPX14 and 13 which was a disaster at the time. VPX14 works.

Hi John.

I strongly suspect that this time around Magix took full use of the new Intel iris Xe MAX graphics chip which for the first time has 4GB of dedicated vram and its 'chiplett' architecture of power and low power cores.

Note in testing they used an ASUS Vivobook Pro that has that CPU / GPU combination for their claimed results.

I don't expect anyone using an older or non recent Intel CPU with graphics chip to obtain those export speeds when they are specific on the system the speed test was conducted on.

You have just got to love advertising people.

Hi Ray

. . . . You have just got to love advertising people. . . .

Of course you have to 😂. If you go 'down the rabbit hole' with this you can see why, people want performance - 'speed is everything'.

Intel are now delivering better GPU performance with the Iris XE iGPUs - they have a new more efficient architecture and instruction sets for performing GPU related tasks.

Throw in the new chiplet design CPUs with 3 discrete chips in one package instead of a single die, with the Efficiency cores being the 'office junior' doing the mundane tasks, leaving the Performance chips to do the high end tasks, and a separate GPU chip with dedicated RAM built in, they have something to 'crow about'.

The big problem I can see coming up is that the Iris XE is not 'one GPU for all', there are currently 4 different architectures for different use situations, and processor and computer type ie PC, Laptop, Tablet, selection is going to be more complex.

Hi John.

'speed is everything'.

Is that a Donald Campbell quote? Sorry, bad taste joke.

Building a new computer of even ordering a new prebuilt machine is now becoming increasingly expensive yet again and with current inflation I think programmers should seriously think about their customer base.

Unless someone is also gaming, having the latest and greatest computer components is not often on the top of their shopping list. It is also getting harder to chose the correct components as you have alluded to and it gets easier to make mistakes or not know what components may be the correct ones to buy for future proofing if that is even possible now.

The last thing on my mind right now is another computer upgrade. It looks on the face of it that playback would be smoother on my machine and at least that is welcomed. Faster export speeds for me is not as much of an issue as bugs are.

The problem is with such small development teams of relatively small companies (workforce wise) their time gets too divided between faultfinding and development. After all, how else to increase or maintain sales?

Personally I would like to see Magix reduce their advertising team and increase their software engineering section. But for ironing out bugs😎
