Copy/pasting video effect: Bug in Pixelan, MEP or neither?

terrypin wrote on 4/10/2014, 10:29 AM

To reproduce:

1. Place an object (still or video) on the MEP 2014 timeline. Call this object X.

2. Duplicate it and place it alongside. Call this object Y.

3. Select X and apply any simple MEP effect, such as a zoom.

4. Select X and apply any Pixelan effect, such as the default BlurPro or ChromaWarp.

5. Select X, right click and use Video effects > Copy video effects.

6. In the resulting pop-up dialog, uncheck the Pixelan entry (or entries) and click Continue.

7. Select Y, right click and use Video effects > Paste video effects.

Y incorrectly still has the Pixelan effect.

Bug? If so, MEP or Pixelan?

Hi Terry,

You are right, but I don't know which one is at fault. I suggest sending this to Pixelan for a start. Will you do this?

I will now look at your other post.

Hi John,

Thanks for the confirmation.

I've reported to both Magix and Pixelan.

I've also just discovered that after applying a Pixelan effect, Undo does not remove it.

(But Reset video effects does.)

Hi Terry,

It's 9C here and the snow is rapidly melting, except in the shadow behind the house. It's been a long winter.

Try undo twice. It works. This seems to be the case with all of the effects, all of the CreativeEase effects and Filmtouch 2. I did not find anything about this in the help. Maybe we should ask.

However, with the transitions, 3D, DissolveMaster and SpiceMaster, a single undo removes the transition effect.

Hi John,

Nice catch, thanks! Trivial enough, although very odd. Could have same underlying cause as the problem I've raised.

BTW, while I think of it... Suppose I select an object (which moves the play cursor to it because I have that option enabled) and I then use Undo. For example to remove an effect, or a cut or whatever. The play cursor jumps back to some object on the timeline that has no obvious significance. IOW, it's not an object or timeline position I've used recently. Even if I deliberately select some object X and then Y, Undo still jumps to this location Z! What happens in your case?

9C eh? I'm flying off very early tomorrow morning to Montenegro for a week's walking holiday and I'm looking forward to highs in the low to mid 20s.

Hi Terry,

I tried your undo playback movement. My playback marker stays wherever I left it, this is wherever it happens to be when I Undo. I tried several variations, even clicking on an object to highlight it, moving the marker to another object, adding an effect, which applies it to the selected object, not to the object where the marker is now located, then Undo. Marker does not move. I even moved the marker to a third object and then did Undo. No movement. In each case, Undo did what it was supposed to do. You have a strange marker movement.

Bon voyage!

Thanks John. I'll get back on the case in a week or so. Maybe a restart would fix it.

Hi everyone,

Terry contacted us, and we've looked at this issue in MEP 2012 and 2014, as well as Video Pro X5. We don't see it in MEP 2012, but do see it occurring in the others. We also see it occurring with Magix DK example effect. So both of those signs point to it being a host bug, not ours. Also, when a copy/paste is done of an effect, that usually does not access a plug-in's code. So we strongly believe it is a MEP 2014/Video Pro X5 minor bug. If any of you have other third-party plug-in effects, my hunch is you'll see the same issue with them too. That would be further confirmation it's a Magix issue.

We will contact Magix directly to further reinforce any communications any of you may have already done with Magix about this.

Please let me know if you have questions.

Sincerely,
Michael Feerer

Thanks Michael, appreciate the prompt update. Turns out I have wifi here, so read your post on my iPad.

As mentioned, I reported this minor bug to Magix 3 days ago, but no reply yet.  So yes, it's a good idea for you to complement my report.

Just now noticing that my reply inadvertently said "Magix DK example effect"... what was meant was "Magix SDK example effect" which is a simple example effect they provide to plug-in providers for testing/comparison purposes.

Here's the feedback from MAGIX:

This seems to be a pretty clear-cut MEP bug. I get the same issue with other third-party effects that we are providing with the software. The external plug-in effect seems to be transferred by the effect copy/paste procedure, even if it was explicitly deselected. I will file a report for it.
