Data leak?

terrypin wrote on 1/23/2021, 6:29 AM

OT, but hopefully of interest.

The Dropbox Passwords app I installed a couple of weeks ago has a Security alert section which lists a dozen of my web accounts as having had a 'data leak', and recommending I change my password. magix.info is one of them. In company with other major sites like chess.com, macrium.com, excelforum.com, etc. This is 12 from several hundred.

I don't recall any communication from Magix and wonder if anyone of the other regulars have any more info please?

I'm always reluctant to change passwords but probably will do so later today.

Hi Terry

AFAIK there has been no recent leak from Dropbox - the last was in 2017 and I got an email to change password.

Rather than relying on the DropBox app which may not be totally correct ie your email address may be in many of n the 'lists' online, however if a password has been leaked and then I would start changing them. To be useful to a hacker the password must be directly linked to the address.

Check with Have i been pawned, recommended by Which, there is also a password checker there to detect if your password(s) has been leaked.

Email addresses on their own are not a danger as they can be scraped from websites, if posted, additionally . marketing companies and Social Media sites are, IMO the worst offenders - selling your data.

I stopped using FB several years and WhatsApp gets the trash bin treatment end of this month.

If you have had phone calls saying you have been in a recent accident - same principle.

Selling data is big business, hence the large number of people deserting WhatsApp for better messaging sites.

Hi John,

Was that a typo? I was asking about a leak from Magix.

I’ll also see what that alternative tool reports, thanks for the lead.

All my web account entries, including the 12 suspects mentioned, include username, email and password.

Hi Terry.

I have had constant emails from Google for over a few years about Dropbox being insecure and I have ignored all of the warnings. Funnily though in the last few months I have heard very little from Google about Dropbox. I have heard nothing from Dropbox itself on the subject of data breaches. Which do I believe?

I have heard nothing about Magix data breaches.

Hi both,

Just checked that Pawned site and it reported just one breach of my main current email address: MrExcel.com.

It's clearly not a direct comparison because that tool searches just one email address (I used my main current ID), not all the web sites in which I've ever registered an account, stretching back into the distant past.

But it does raise obvious questions about the usefulness of the analysis.

I’ll take it up with their Support.

P.S. FWIW, Passwords only works on my PC, despite also being installed and properly configured on both my iPhone and iPad.

Did you link your Magix account any other site eg Youtube, eg for uploading direct from MEP?

As Ray has commented I too have heard nothing about a breach at Magix.

Hi Terry.

I'm also interested in why you chose a separate application to store your passwords.

I just use my web browser's with my account with it. Even if I have to totally rebuild my PC (lose both copies of Windows) I can get all my passwords back from a backup file or logging into my account.

At least your post made me look deeper into Dropbox and now know why I don't get messages from Google any more. They are now both in partnership with Microsoft for cloud based sharing of files and no longer seen as competition to each other.

I'm wondering if you use the MEP cloud storage solution at all and if that has a part to play. I have never used that side of things. Apart from Dropbox and Nikon's shared space that comes from owning Nikon gear that I mainly have used to place images into old websites I set up some time back, I rarely use either.

Separate from what?

I'm a long term Dropbox user but until a week or so ago have never used a 'password manager'. (Apart from my own notes - now some years overdue for massive editing!)

What web browser do you use? Can you amplify on "I just use my web browser's with my account with it" please? I'm not impressed with the DB PW app so I'd welcome alternatives.

I don't use any MEP 'cloud storage' (AFAIK!).

Hi John EB.

I wasn't referring to anyone in particular. I can't recall talking to anyone about password protection or the saving of passwords in the past. Actually I just remembered about a conversation I did have with you but at the time of writing my comment above it wasn't in my mind at all.

Hi John CB.

I was referring to the the part within MEP that allows access to anyone's One Drive or other cloud storage spaces.

Hi Terry.

I use Firefox but not necessarily for that reason although it exists and is useful. I know others here don't like Firefox but I use it because it has the most accurate colour management of any current web browser although the gap between its colour management and other browsers get closer each passing year.

Personally I worry more about various web links than having my passwords hijacked. Even my antivirus has yet to get close to my location.

From my own perspective I don't really trust any of it and do as much checking for myself as I am capable of.

The problem with the internet is there is always a compelling opposite viewpoint that may have merit.

I would rather pay subscription fees or one off payments than be offered free items that cost privacy issues but I'm sure governments would object as much to that as the companies would. 😂

What I do like to spend a little time doing when I can is to browse where I have absolutely no interest. Like things I don't like and dislike things I do like. Just to mix things up a bit. Google to my mind is much worse than Facebook.

But then even my car tracks me when I don't have my phone with me. I just can't get away from some things. 🙁

Ray.

Hi Ray,

I was referring to the the part within MEP that allows access to anyone's One Drive or other cloud storage spaces.

That would be "Cloud Import" under the Import tab. It does nothing in MEP2021 and VPX12 for me. It seems to be broken. Can others please check this?

This is linked to the Update Notifier, Cloud Import and is supposed to give access to Google Drive and OneDrive - for the user who has the un/pw to his account, not just anyone. I couldn't log in to Google Drive - it told me that something, like my browse, was not secure. OneDrive worked ok and opened it. I clicked out of OneDrive and the Update Notifier told me that the Magix Cloud Import Wizard has already been started and is running in the background. There is a button "Display." Clicking on it does nothing.

So, this seems to be broken as well. Others?

Hi John.

I wouldn't know as I have no other online storage areas other than Nikon My Space and Dropbox.

I had disabled all links in the MEP VPX cloud import app to stop it from popping up. Google Drive has been replaced by Google with Google Backup and Sync so probably doesn't work. No idea on the Windows One Drive.

I have disabled anything I don't use in Windows such as Cortana and the Xbox app.
