Does adjusting the movie and video monitor settings to view AVCHD files better, permanantly change that file

I am using Magix Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus to edit AVCHD files. When I place a file into the editor, a window opens and says "The active movie has a resolution of 720X480 (4:3), 29.97 fps. The file "00321.MPG" has a resolution of 1440x1080 (16:9), 29.97 fps. If you wish to adjust the movie and video monitor settings to the imported file, click on "adjust".

 

The question then --- Is my original video file degraded by selecting this option? Will the movie I create and burn to a DVD or CD have the lower resolution of 720X480?

Don't worry! MEP is a 'non-destructive' editor. Not only are your original files unaffected by the preview settings, but they remain intact after you make cuts, delete pieces and rearrange the remains. The MEP projects, which you 'Save' or 'Save as a '.MVP or .MVD file, contains information about the resources you have used (clips, images, sounds) and what to do with them (cuts, transitions, effects titles etc)  to create your final output -- not cut up pieces of film. You set the resolution and quality of your output from the export menues.

 

One tiny exception can be your use of an external editor (from within MEP using right click menu) for adjusting say a jpeg image. I use Magix 'Xtreme Photo designer' and after making a change I have the option, on return to MEP, of overwriting my original. This is useful as the altered photo as put back on the MEP timeline including any effects I've added there like placement for a picture-in-picture. 

 

Do however make sure you have backups just as you (hopefully!) would for any valuable computer data. Hard drive can crash. :-(
