Does the new Movie Edit Pro use GPU to speed up video rendering?

ggrussell wrote on 9/11/2016, 4:33 PM

I'm trying to decide whether to upgrade or not.  Does the new Movie Edit Pro use the GPU for any video rendering?  Not just transitions or effects, but just  rendering MPEg 2 to MP4.

Hi

The new versions are no different to the older versions in this respect and it depends on your GPU.

It currently only works with older Nvidia up to 5xx series and AMD cards (not sure but 7200 I think approx 2011/12)

and Intel HDxxxx integrated GPU's.

So doesn't take advantage of any new GPU cards like GTX 1060 or AMD RX470?  I've always liked Magix audio editing software, but this is the only thing holding me back on upgrading my video editor.

Hi

. . . .  So doesn't take advantage of any new GPU cards . . . .

If the graphics card is compatible and you have activated Hardware acceleration in the programs settings, see image below, then MEP will use the GPU.

If MEP cannot use the HWA then you will get a message saying it has been de-activated.

Thanks  but several 'if' s there.  Would be nice to know for sure which GPUs are actually supported.

As per my reply (but up to Radeon 6900 series), no. The current cards do some parallel processing of video effects and transitions during a software encode (CPU), but the benefit to speed is at best incremental (maybe more if you have a weak CPU) and at worst, "Calculate video effects on GPU" has been the cause of encoding failures at export.

Note that Hardware encoding via a GPU always incurs a quality hit, usually in loss of detail in low contrast high detail areas.

The biggest benefit of current cards is acceleration of video effects during preview of the timeline.

Thanks so appears there are no advantages for me to upgrade at all.

Welcome to my club. I have an old OC'd Quad core AMD like you and bought a GTX 960 for Blender renders. Unfortunately, it doesn't help with MEP.

I wrote to the head of Magix about this in a snail mail.

It shouldn't be hard for Magix to incorporate NEVC. Perhaps you'll write too, telling him that there's no point in us upgrading until MEP flies with NEVC encoding.

Started with MEP 11, then 17, then MX, then MEP 2013, 2015, then 2016. Changed to the fast competitor after that, which worked fine with my non-Intel hardware. Then bought a used Dell with an Intel GPU, just to play with MEP again. Installed MEP 2020 Plus in March 2020, even tho I don't like losing patches if I have to reinstall after a year.

Testing on a Dell Vostro, <s>i3-8100</s> updated to i5-9400 w/ UHD 630, 16 GB 2400 DDR4 (CL15), Win10 Home, heavily NTLite'd. Now with GTX-1650 Super OC'd. Added a WD Blue M.2 for OS (PCIe 3), Apps, Temps and Video-In. 2 Monitors. A WD Blue SSD for outputs. (SATA III.)

I read somewhere that Magix bought Sony's Movie Studio.  I was hoping some of that technology would be in the next MEP.

Even if Magix did incorporate GPU hardware encoding into MEP, how would we know, now that MEP is generically called "Movie Edit Pro"? It sounds like its features are now frozen forever.

I downloaded a trial of the newest movie edit pro, just to see if my GPU is supported while rendering. Seems it's only supported on when rendering transformations and effects. While rendering movie the GPU (video encoding) stays in 0% utilization and cpu 70-90%. During effects the GPU 3D accel goes up a bit. So atleast AMD RX580 is not fully supported in this editor.

@Pikku-Y

Hi

Did you not notice this topic is 3 years old and refers to an older version of Movie Edit Pro.

Please do not resurrect old topics.

Create a new topic and include your computer specification details as detailed in this topic and which export format you are using.

I will lock this topic.

Thanks
