DVD/Blu-ray Burning

I have a question to ask regarding videos that are intended for DVD & Blu-ray.

If I wanted to burn an SD video to a standard DVD, will there always be a loss of quality which is unavoidable?

If I wanted to burn a HD video to a Blu-ray, which codec should I use so that no loss of quality occurs?

DVD video must use the mpeg-2 format. BD must use the M2TS format, which is a variant of the mpeg-2 format. Neither disc type can contain any other format of video files if the content is to be playable by standard, domestic DVD and BD players.

As to the specifics of your questions: because DVD is only ever SD (Standard Definition is part of the DVD specification), whether there will be any "loss of quality" very much depends on the source files used. Technically, if the source files are HD then yes, there will be some loss of quality but, given that modern DVD players can often "upscale" DVD footage, whether such loss will be visible is debatable.

For BD, since this is part of the official specification of the format, you can use only the codec that can output as M2TS.. So, whatever the HD format of your source files, the exported files must meet the specification.

Sometimes. But not always. M2TS is usually done with an AVC codec. But m2ts files on a Blu-ray disc could be anything that is Blu-ray format compliant. For example if you put a compliant SD vob or mpeg2 file on a Blu-ray disc it will become a m2ts file but it's still the original mpeg2.
