DVDs cut don't play

Dell Inc. OptiPlex 3070
Bios Version 1.25.0

Motherboard Manufacturer Dell Inc.
Model 07WP95
Version A01
Operating System
Edition Microsoft Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
Version (Build) 23H2 (10.0.22635)

I cut DVDs to disc (single and double layer) and they do not play either on my video player or even back in the DVD Drive where they were cut on the PC that cut them.
This is more than a little annoying,

I am building a pile of useless DVDs.

What can be wrong?

Hi Rick

. . . . I cut DVDs to disc (single and double layer) and they do not play either on my video player or even back in the DVD Drive . . . .

What procedure are you using to do this from start to burning to disc and what software.

Hi @johnebaker

I am using MAGIX Video Pro X16 20.0.1.270 and AFIK following standard procedure for burning DVD. There is, I think, only a set set of steps to create a DVD with VPX16.

Perhaps these give some insight.

Hi Rick,

Can you also show us a picture of the Disc Burning screen?

Have you tried using the Image Recorder option, which will produce an .iso file which can then be burned to disc using any standard disc burning software (I use Ashampoo Burning Studio for single-layer discs and ImgBurn for dual).

What brand of discs are you using?

Have you tried burning to a rewriteable disc (so you don't keep producing coasters)?

Is your signature up to date? If so, your version of Win 11 is several updates "old"; the latest release is 25H2.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the images; everything appears "normal" there! And for listing the type of disc. But are they DVD+R or DVD-R? In my experience, for single-layer -R are "better", i.e. produce fewer failures.

What about the other questions I asked (using the image Recorder option or rewriteable discs?)

Hi Jeff

I have tried both -R and +R in both single and dual layer.
I have not used re-writable for DVDs having had bad experienced with them just filing data. Anyway, I don't think anyone in the remote wilds of Perth would have DVD-DL re-writables.

I have never had any success in creating DVDs from ISOs - and that would only be on single layer discs because they would have been short movies.

Hi Rick

From the burn image above it looks like you are burning to a slim line DVD burner (HL-DT-ST-DVD=-RW GU90N) is this an external USB drive or a laptop ? If a laptop then the computer spec in your signature out of date.

If an external device, is it powered from a small powerpack or has a double USB connector for taking power from the PC.

Rick, I don't have VPX 17 but what I do do these days (as burners become less plentiful and OSs advance) is burn to an ISO first, check that it plays OK in VLC Player, then burn it to disk using IMGBurn.

That will help isolate where the problem is: either in the software process or the physical burn process.

Also, check you disk types; see this post:

I have just spent six hours with MS CoPilot uninstalling VPX16, cleaning any trace of VPX16 from my PC including Folders, files, Registry Keys and other things above my pay grade, reinstalling VPX16 without ads popups and other annoying traits I know of old. The idea has been to rid my PC of the ghosts of previous installations of VPX16 and rid myself of ill consequences of meeting such ghosts.
I should now have a version of VPX16 as pure as driven snow, untouched by human hand, virginal and all the other nice things. If VPX16 is ever going to cut 4hrs+ DVD to disc it should be now.
1. Does that sound right?

One thing before I risk turning another DVD-DL into a brick:
My PC has a video card

2. Should I change the NVIDIA entries to CPU?

I would as I've had experience, with other software, of Blu-ray renders with NVIDIA not being Blu-ray compliant.

CPU only will, of course, be much slower

Rick,

Should a squeaky-clean version of VPX16 burn DVD-DL discs okay?

It "should", but "will" it? 😂

One thing before I risk turning another DVD-DL into a brick:

Burn to the "Image Recorder"/ISO first. If that bit fails, you know it's the program. If it's good (ie plays in VLC Player OK), it's the actual burn process that isn't working. If it works, you don't have to "reburn" it, you can use the same files to create the disk (or you can use IMGBurn).

Also, it might be my paranoia, but I like to give myself a couple of hundred MBs space on my disks, so I adjust the bitrate down in the Encoder Settings to achieve that.

The MKV source file imports into VPX16 with the Audio but no Video. Where the video thumbnails should be is a green rectangle/ The movie plays in the editor but the video is stubbornly blank green.

Hi Rick

. . . . Blu-Ray. I thought it had gone the way of VHS . . . .

Not yet, it is still quite popular, however there are fewer BD Burner and disc manufacturers. DVD's are nearly on the extinction list, the low resolution of 720 x 576 (PAL) does not look as good on FullHD and 4K TV's, compared to Blu-Ray.

. . . . The MKV source file imports into VPX16 with the Audio but no Video . . . .

This would suggest the MKV files have an 'illegal' or none supported video/audio codec combination.

A MediaInfo analysis one of the MVK clips would help, I believe you may already have this installed. If not you can get it from here, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

The HDTV settings are correct for the TV standard in your location.

If the videos import without popping up a message about the 'project settings being different do you want to adjust' dialog the the HDTV setting, all is well, the MediaInfo data will gives us a better view of what you are dealing with.

Rick,

Movie Edit pro/Movie Studio/Video Deluxe have always been flaky with MKV imports, in fact, in my case, more often than not they don't work. Magix can't deal with the MKV format, even though the video itself is probably just plain old H264/AVC (as yours are, by the looks of your MediaInfo).

My normal workaround is to "convert " the MKV into an MP4 using AVIDemux. I've written a tute about how to do this here. It's a fast, lossless process and Magix will/should then be able to open your file.

Re your movie settings, if you're making DVDs, you should you an SD preset (720x576i, 25fps, either 4:3 or 16:9). The HDTV preset should be used for a Bluray project.
