Editing Mobile Phone clips system

I have fallen into a trap that I had previously experienced, and wonder what system others use. Or perhaps it is just me!

I have just edited a couple of clips recorded on mobile phones, exported to MPEG-4 and found that I had no audio for the last few seconds. Correction, afterwards I found that it was actually the video that had been stretched.

My error that I finally realised was that I had looked at the ‘Properties’ of each clip, they were the same, and so set up the parameters for editing in MEP. It was only afterwards when I had the problem with the export that I checked with Media Info to see that frame rate mode was actually ‘Variable’.

So should I be first checking EVERY clip I intend to edit in MEP with Media Info if it has originally been recorded on a mobile phone? Or only those I intend to export where audio has been included, as, had, there been no audio with my recent export I would not have realised that the video had been stretched, albeit slightly.

@Xenofex2

Hi George.

Interesting question!

I've recently been involved in an ongoing project which has included video files from several different contributors, many of them using a mobile phone to record the footage. I have learned to always "check" the file with MediaInfo before I try to import it to a project. If the frame rate is variable and shows a large difference between Maximum and Minimum I tend to run it through Handbrake (or MovAvi, in which I have set up a specific configuration) and only then actually use it in a video editing project.

Jeff,

As I suspected, thankyou.

Lesson learnt.
