Entire video file won't load onto timeline

chadbresson wrote on 8/23/2020, 9:55 AM

When I load the video file onto the timeline from the import section, the last 45 to 60 seconds are cut off. I know the file is longer because I can play the end of it on the local media player. This is the first time this has happened... so... is there a cache issue... something I'm missing?

Hi Chad.

Have you tried dragging the right hand side of the clip further to the right? Your Icon should turn from being an arrow to looking like two vertical bars with small outward pointing arrows left and right of the two vertical lines.

You may have to shrink the view first if it is the only clip on the timeline.

Hi

As I suspected the video frame rate mode is Variable, Movie Edit Pro does not work well variable framerate video - many other video editors also do not like variable frame rate.

The video must be Constant frame rate - you need to run the video through a video converter program such as Handbrake to change the frame rate to constant - keep all the other parameters ie bitrate, resolution and file format the same.

@johnebaker I get that... all the other movie files in the project are variable frame rates as well. Just don't know why this one is a problem. It was recorded the same as the rest.

Hi

. . . . all the other movie files in the project are variable frame rates as well . . .

This is possible if the average frame rate of these files is much closer to the project frame rate and range variation is small enough.

The clip that is at issue has a range of 15 to 30 fps (rounded off) with an average of 27.73 fps.

What was the recording device - can it be set to record at constant frame rate?

@johnebaker Samsung Note 9... using Cinema FV-5 app. Checking both the app and native camera... if there is an option between variable and constant, it doesn't seem intuitive... couldn't find it.

Currently running the file through Handbrake... I'll let you know the result.

btw... while we're on the Note 9... any way to override the 12-minute limit? I've monkeyed with all sorts of settings.. I have the "limit file duration" toggle off on the Cinema FV-5, but still automatically shuts down (and restarts as a new file) after 12 minutes.

There is a 4GB file size limit to most devices due to the file being compliant with other devices such as memory cards that may have formatting restrictions (Like FAT 32). So it's not a 12 minute limit as such, more of a file size limit. If you have to end up recording at a constant frame rate to avoid future editing problems (most likely) you will see that time limit fall further.

Hi

In the FV5 app video section you have to turn on custom settings mode, you can then set the framerate, however you will need to use MediaInfo to check it is delivering constant frame rate

@chadbresson

Looking at those options, none of them are optimal. All of them are about saving storage space and easier live streaming. All of them could and probably will give a variable frame rate output. It would seem the way of things with newer phones. Most files would need converting after.

It may be worth looking at the Android developers site. for further information.

@johnebaker Many thanks. Constant rate through Handbrake worked! That's awesome. Guess I'll have to have Handbrake as a standby...
