Export failing when using NewBlue CartoonR Plus

Acer Aspire 5 A515-45

Windows 10 and Windows 11

Magix Movie Editor Premium 2021

I have a problem using the plug-in "NewBlue CartoonR Plus" within Magix Movie Editor
Pro Premium 2021.

I am unable to EXPORT a project containing this plug-in . I have tried exporting
using different formats, quality, frame size etc. but always immediately get an
error message, as below:

--------------------------------
A serious program error occurred

Error in module "ManagerGL64.dll" (Load address Ox00007FF988EB0000) to address
Ox00007FF988ED1F3D (Exception Oxc0000005 "ACCESS_VIOLATION")

Movies Opened

D:\WORKSHOP\MovieEditPro\2021-11-23 MVD*
----------------------------------------

(D:\WORKSHOP\MovieEditPro\ is a folder on my PC)

I AM able to use this plug-in within the application, that is I am able to move the
cursor on the Video Monitor to and fro and the project shows the effect as expected.
It is only when exporting that a problem arises.

However, I have just purchased Magix Photostory 2022 and find I am able to
use this same plug-in with no trouble at all, the project exports perfectly.

Obviously I don't know where the problem lies, in Magix or NewBlue, but the fact
that it works in Photostory but not in Movie Editor leads me to think it might be
within Movie Editor Pro.

This error also occurred in the past while using Magix Movie Editor Premium 2021 on
a previous PC (HP 255 G7).

Also, the error occurs both with the original CartoonR Plus download AND the update,
which I downloaded at the same time as I downloaded the plug-ins from NewBlue
included in my new Photostory package.

I have had no problems using any other NewBlue effects downloads.

Are you able to assist me with this problem?

Thank you

Hi.Michael.

Did you read the specs needed to run the application?

It mentions VPX but not Movie edit Pro and the minimum specs for HD content is.

Windows 10

A recent Nvidia or AMD GPU that supports OpenGL 2.1 or later. 1 GB VRAM is required. 4 GB VRAM is recommended when working with HD content.

Supports 64-bit video editing applications only.

That suggests it also needs the use of a separate graphics card with a minimum of 4GB of Vram to work with HD content.

If you have managed to get it to work at all in Magix Photostory 2022 I would call that a win.

Really that is all I can assume as the only clue as to your computer is the make and model number which just comes up as an AMD powered machine with inboard graphics.

Hi CubeAce,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, you're right about my graphics, just inboard Radeon. The processor is AMD Ryzen 7 5700UI, with 8Gb of RAM.

I will have to look up the finer details of the specs you suggested VRAM etc. but, on the face of it, I find it hard to understand how the same plug-in will allow exporting in Photostory, but not Movie Edit, if the specs of the computer are insufficient.

Also, as I said, the actual effect works fine in the timeline. I would have thought the export function would work as it would for any movie in the timeline. As I see it, it's just a bunch of frames to process and write to disk. An error in playing that exported file I could understand more. There again, I'm no expert on the inner workings of the application.

I'll probably end up getting in touch with both Magix Support and/or NewBlue to see what, if anything, they can come up with.

Thanks anyway

Hi

. . . . ManagerGL64.dll . . . .

This is a NewBlue dll file.

That it works correctly in Photostory 2022 and not MEP 2021 could point to the difference in the Infusion 'engines', of the 2 products, Photostory 2022 uses Infusion 3 and MEP 2021 uses the Infusion 2.

If Cartoonr is the older free version I also cannot get it to work with MEP 2021.

Hi Micheal.

I have never used photo story but the specs to run that program are much lower and quite possibly is using a completely different rendering engine within the program. What video resolution are you able to export to with Photo Story as I notice it doesn't go above HD, certainly not 4K or 8K as MEP can.

Hi Ray,

Photostory 2022 can do up to 4K, the test I did with CartoonR Plus was FullHD.

I've just seen another post from @johnebaker that tells me Photostory 2022 uses Infusion3 to compile while MEP uses Infusion 2 and he can't get it to work on MEP either. Starting to look like I'm doomed!

Does that mean it should run in MEP 2022 John?

Hi Ray

If I can find the installer in my archive I am going to test it, in theory it should, I suspect the Infusion 3 engine is better/more stable when using GPU's for effects.

Hi, just had a play with a 21secs, 4k 3840x2160 clip, it really struggled, it wouldn't play unless i created proxies & clicked the lightening symbol, after prerendering it played fine, exporting estimate was 1hr, then dropped to 33mins but didn't do much after 10mins of exporting as if it had frozen.

btw, this was a 4k 3840x2160 screen capture of it, to upload it here

I exported with Magix MEP Premium @ MP4 FHD 1920x1080, it took 0.44secs

I tried rendering with Vegas, same settings MP4 HD 1920x1080, it took 0.58secs 🤷‍♂️🤣🤣🤣

@Former user

Hi,

Just wondered if you are aware that Creating Proxies would bring less benefit to smooth playback than pre-rendering in that pre-rendering, whilst also creating a proxy, also renders the cartooner effect - so most of the work is done prior to hitting play.

but didn't do much after 10mins of exporting as if it had frozen.

It may well have frozen! Did you check that the exported file had all the frames when viewed?

If you are using MEP2022 then there have been problems with the export preview window freezing after which the rest of the file is blank even though the export completes. Are you on the latest .104 patch?

@Scenestealer Hi, I was trying a bit of everything to be honest, I just got an update for MEP Premium the other day, I understand the main concept of prerendering but I didn't know it created proxies as well, In another comment i have problems with prerender ignoring crossfades so that's interesting, thanks 👍 there are no crossfades in this, as i wrote it played well with prerender, the prerender process was fast 👍 No i didn't check an exported file, it got to a point where there was no movement, it didn't complete, there may have been a half completed export but sorry i've cleaned out that file now 🤦‍♂️🤣 I'll have another go later, I should be working but spent most of the morning playing with editing software 🤣🤣🤣

Thanks

Hi.

Regarding pre-rendering. Using the Auto setting often misses parts the program thinks will play smoothly and is better to do manually be selecting a range and then select 'Range' in the pre-render box. The problem then is any alteration of that section will not show up on playback.
