external hardware

I would like to use an external control device, like an x-keys or Nano controller from Korg for adjusting levels, mixes and variables adjusted thru the visual interface of the software. This question asks about Video Pro X but could also pertain to audio mixing and photos where we are adjusting many of the "control knobs" of the software. Is there any chance this can be done?

Hi Micheal.

While it is possible to connect something like a shuttle pro to VPX to control forward and reverse playback as well as assigning buttons to do macros like cutting I have found no access for MIDI control surfaces. John EB and John CB can give more detail on shuttle use.

From a personal standpoint, I think MIDI control of the audio mixer would be futile as the lag between a physical action the the resulting action within the software is often lagging behind to a degree that trying to use a control surface in real time would tend amount to be useless. The only automation curves available to draw in that I can find are volume and pan. Automation of the various vst effects does not seem to be available nor can I find any reference to any mixer maps.

Ray.

Hi

To add to @CubeAce comment, if you were live recording then both devices you mentioned may be useful, however personally I think you would find that they are overkill, and will actually slow you down when video editing.

I have a Shuttle as Ray commented, and find that I do not use it a great deal, as when editing I find the keyboard on one hand and mouse in the other using keyboard shortcuts or mouse clicks, left or right for context menus, are faster. The Shuttle slows me down in many cases as I am constantly switching between it and the keyboard.

I know John CB uses his Shuttle a great deal more than I do.

@johnebaker

Hi John EB,

You have the Shuttle Xpress, I believe, whereas I have the Shuttle ProV2. I still have to take my hands off of both the mouse and the Shuttle Pro, but having many more buttons means less often.

I have found this year that I need to program another bank for editing audio, mainly for turning on object volume curves and switching the mouse mode to draw and back to single mouse mode. I still have to review this.

I currently have 3 banks, one for general moving around, one for importing in different ways, and the most used bank for editing.

@Michael-Waldron

The Shuttle Pro uses shortcuts on the buttons, but you can also program in macros. The layout makes it about the most ergonomic controller.

I looked at the X-keys offerings and wouldn't touch them.

I doubt that a Nano controller from Korg would work with MEP/VPX. As mentioned, we are editing already recorded material, not adjusting for a live performance. Just use the Mixer and automation curves on audio. I use two screen, so there is space to have the mixer on-screen while editing.
