Fade effect: Rotate around vertical axis

terrypin wrote on 12/8/2014, 9:53 AM

MEP 2014 has a rich set of easily accessible fades (for those few occasions when anything other than the 'standards' are appropriate). But so far I've not found one exactly like this:

Of course, it's not difficult to achieve with KFA in the Rotation dialog, and I've done that. (Although I had to save two effects, one for each object.) But have I missed a built in fade that does it, which would obviously be more convenient?

Hi Terry

I did the same way as you with KF

First clip rotate from 0 to 90 deg starting 1 sec from the end, second clip 270 to 360 deg over first 1 sec.

To go the other way

First clip rotate from 360 to 270 deg, second clip 90 to 0 deg

. . . . But have I missed a built in fade that does it, which would obviously be more convenient . . . .

Cannot ever remember seeing an effect that does this.

John

Hi Terry

Quick and easy that one:

First clip rotate from 0 to 90 deg starting 1 sec from the end, second clip 270 to 360 deg over first 1 sec.

To go the other way

First clip rotate from 360 to 270 deg, second clip 90 to 0 deg

Thanks John, but, as I said, I've done that.

Hi Terry,

With apologies....

Your sample reminded me of the 3D Maker which I guess could be used to make a transition. Sorry about that, just having fun.

Shutter 3 was the closest I could find.

Pixelan 3D Six-Pack has some nice page turning transitions.

Hi John CB,

First thing in the morning I'll try that neat 3D Maker method, but can it become a genuine 2D like my original example?

Yes, Shutter 3 does get close, but still no seegar.

I'd be interested to know if any of the other popular NLEs support this as a true fade (transition), rather than individual effects on two adjacent objects.

Hi John EB,

Too late tonight to try it, but I think there's a snag with our 'Rotation KFA' method. It would seem impossible to use it on a series of (more than two) successive objects. I reckon you'd require a third KFA configuration. So it's a bit messy, even with the effects saved for easy repetitive use.

I might explore whether a macro could achieve the sama ease-of-use as if it was a true fade. IOW, start with the two adjacent objects selected, activate the macro, and get the appropriate rotation KFAs applied, even if there is already a previously applied KFA of that type applied to the first object.

Hi Terry,

Could you explain what you mean by "I'd be interested to know if any of the other popular NLEs support this as a true fade (transition), rather than individual effects on two adjacent objects," and in particular a true fade transition? Other than a cross fade, aren't they all effects on two overlapping objects?

I have Pinnacle Studio 17.6 and I can take a look, but i'm not sure what to look for.

Hi John,

Given two adjacent objects, I was just making the distinction between the two ways to achieve this neat rotation result:

1. A simple one/two clicks, just like the hundreds of others under MEP's Fade tab.

2. Applying KFA in the Rotation dialog, as John EB and I have done. I think differently placed KFs are needed for the three possibilities depending on whether there's one pair or more.

After further research elsewhere, I gather that (as I suspected) some other programs do provide this, such as Vegas.

One problem here is the translation issue that crops up with Magix products, inevitable for a German developer I suppose. I agree that the word 'fade' should strictly only be used for a cross-fade or to/from black/white/some other colour. But the great majority of the two-object-effects (to coin my own term!) that MEP offers under the Fade tab are really transitions. Some programs call them 'dissolves'.

The reason I homed in on this particular one, Horizontal Rotation, is that the project I've just finished is on UK #1 Hits. Several of the YT clips I saw during research included it. I thought it particularly appropriate for say showing the A and B sides of  a 78 or 45. Or two competing chart entries, etc. And it's a lot less intrusive than many of the zooming, curling, flying, tiling, folding options etc.

Hi Terry,

I went through about a thousand transitions in Pinnacle. Quite amazing really.

Here is the only one that fit, except that it goes the wrong way.

It's called PRO-Flip Over.

Interestingly, Pinnacle has a detailed transition editor in which you can modify things around, translations, rotations, background, etc.

Terry,

I had to hitch up the huskies this morning to trek downtown where I am right now. Just about to turn the dogd around to sled home, so I'm not on my computer.

On the second burn screen, click on advanced. If I recall correctly, you should get another screen that shows what you have selected. Often it shows me 4:3 when everything else is set to 16:9.

I think that you will have to export to 29.97fps. If I was at home, I would try making a 25fps if I had a short video clip at that speed, then burning to 29.97 fps. But, I guess that you can't wait to send your package tomorrow. Let me know and if you want, I can try it when I get home in an hour or two.

Huskies - you guys are HARD!

I'll wait for at least another 24 hours before deciding what to do. After more googling I get the impression that many Americans/Canadians can play PAL DVDs. If true I could just send my standard DVD. Or I might even abandon the DVD idea and upload the 3 GB to Vimeo. An emailed URL doesn't have quite the desired impact as a gift-wrapped DVD though.

I made it home. Now I have to take the normal dog for a run in the woods in that wet sticky snow.

Here is what I mentioned about burning. The Advanced button brings up the following screens and shows me a 4:3 ratio, but my project was created as 16:9, NTSC, 29.97fps. I always have to change the parameter on the second page.

I have sucessfully made collage effects using your create collage method for 2 and 4 images.

The odd settings are when you rotate the end of 2 and subsequent objects, but not the last, in order to keep rotating in the same direction - you must rotate from 360 to 450deg ( equivalent to rotating form 0 to 90 deg ) !

The good part is once you have created the first preview video and image you can just copy, paste and rename them.

IOW, the auto setting overrides the other one, yes? IMO that's a bug, as they should both display the correct AR.

Hi John,

For the time being I've settled for just a single collage, which applies the effect to an isolated pair of images, as I envisage using it relatively infrequently. Here's the detail:
