GoPro Hero 7 - hissing noise instead of sound

Christian-Rinke wrote on 10/22/2018, 2:37 PM

Hello,

I just imported the footage from my GoPro Hero7 for the first time into Magix Movie Edit Pro 2016 (Vs 15.0.0.114 (UDP3)), but instead of the sound I only hear a hissing noise. Looking at the waveform in Magix, it's just a straight line :-( The video plays fine otherwise, but the sound got somehow lost.

If I open the same video with any other player (Dell Media player, VLAN player) the image and sound work just fine, so I was wondering if there is a way to figure out why Magix has a problem?

Best,

Chris

BTW, here is the audio information of the gopro file:

bit rate: 185kbps

channels: 2 stereo

Audio sample rate: 48.000kHz

ITEM type: MP4 file

Please let me know if you need any other info.

Seems the only way is to convert the MP4 into MP3 (for example with VLC) player, and then to import the MP4 and the MP3 file into Magix, remove the sound from the MP4 file and align the MP3 file to the MP4 movie. This works, but it sucks that Magix can't read MP4 correctly ;-(

I would agree wholeheartedly, if that were always true, but it isn't! mp4 files can be and are successfully played back in MEP, but mp4 is a "container" format, the actual codecs used in its creation can, and do, vary widely! My suspicion is that the GoPro is using some kind of proprietary codec which MEP cannot read.

So, please download and install the free Mediainfo utility, point it to one of your GoPro native files (i.e. NOT one whose audio you have converted) and post the results of the Text view to your reply. That will show exactly which codec the GoPro is using and may well give we fellow-users some ideas to help you.

As a matter of interest, I would certainly NOT consider converting the audio to mp3, which is designed to be a "presentation" format, can be quite/very highly compressed (thus permanently removing some data) and is really not suitable to use in any "editing" program.

I film for a living and use various cameras that film in MP4 including GoPros, Yi, and Panasonic. All my editing is carried out in Magix VPX and I have never had a problem with mp4 files including 4k. I would agree with everything that Jeff said in his post.

The workaround to converting to mp3 is surely not ideal, but that was the only solution I could find so far - based on some youtube videos of other people having a similar problem.

Hi again.

Thanks for the additional information.

I see the audio in the file uses the AAC LC codec. The fact that you cannot hear the correct audio seems to suggest that codec is missing from your computer. I also see that one entry says "GoProAAC", which suggests, I think, a proprietary codec is being used, i.e one that is not generally available to other, non-GoPro software.

Have you tried playing one of your files in any other playback software than MEP? If so, was it successful?

Hi Jeff, but how do you explain that all other software that I tried (Dell Media player, VLAN player) can play the video with sound just find on my computer? - only Magix Movie Edit Pro 2016 (Vs 15.0.0.114 (UDP3) can't.

These players have their own codecs built in but programs like NLE's are only licensed to use certain codecs and can not necessarily access other codecs on your system. You may need to import the footage to the Gopro software and output it with a codec that is available in MEP.

BTW - Media Info states the clips audio bit rate is 192kbps but you stated earlier that it was 185kbps? MEP often baulks at non standard bit rates.

@Christian-Rinke

Hi

Do you have any 'All in one' codec packs, eg KLite, installed?

If so uninstall it, it is not necessary for MEP, and then Restart the computer and try loading the video file in again.

Also try the restoring the original sound - right click the video clip on the timeline and select Audio functions, Restore original sound.

Thank you John,
but no, there is no "All in one" codec pack installed on my system, and audio functions doesn't include an "Restore original sound option" in my MEP 2016 PLUS anyway.

Interestingly MEP 2018 - I just installed the free trial version on my PC next to MEP 2016- does not have the "gopro sound" issue. So I still think it might be a bug in the 2016 version, and I am afraid I have to upgrade (=$100) to fix this.

@Peter, the 185kbps is what I get when I make a right click in windows explorer, not sure how accurate that is . . .

Hi,

I have got the same problem. Did you find a solution after your last post or did you upgrade?

yvon-robert wrote on 12/27/2018, 10:15 AM

Hi,

you work with the latest GoPro technology and try to use an old Magix 2016 version you must upgrade to 2019 or try the demo version. A Video player like Dell is alway updated that is the reason player read and play without problem. Don't try to play with computer you are not programmer and have no ressources or programming ability.

YR

Hi

Please read this topic and come back with more information ie:

  1. your computer specification

  2. GoPro model you are using

  3. more information on the actual issue

  4. MediaInfo analysis data from one of the clips that is causing the issue.

Hi Patrick,

I had MEP 2016 and MEP 2018 (trial version) running on the same system but only the latter could play the gopro files correctly, so I decided to pay for the upgrade. Now I run the MEP 2018 full version and it works just fine with the footage from the GOPro Hero 7.
