Hardware Encoding for MPEG-4 Export Stopped Working

Ronald-King wrote on 9/17/2023, 2:57 PM

I had Movie Studio 2018. It was taking about 3 minutes to render a 1 min video using MPEG-4 under the 'Best' quality. About two weeks ago I upgraded to MS24 and was pleased to see that rendering was completed in 30 seconds or less with hardware encoding. Now, just about 10 days later, MS24 has reverted to taking 3 minutes to render and is stating (in the Mixdown window) that I need to update my graphics drivers. I verified that my NVIDIA drivers are indeed up to date, but that did not help. Is there something else I need to do?

Please advise.

Hi Ronald.

If you also have an Intel processor with an inboard GPU it could be that driver that needs updating.

Alternatively the latest nvidia driver is 536.99 if using the studio driver or 537.34 if using the game ready driver.

If you have a machine from a major manufacturer you may have to visit their website to see if the standard nvidia drivers can be used or if alternative drivers are available.

Some legacy nvidia cards are no longer supported with new drivers but that would probably mean quite an old card.

My video Card is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060Ti, and I have verified I have driver version 537.34. I am looking to see if there is an Intel driver to update. I have an 11th Gen Core i7-11700K. As I noted, this whole thing worked perfectly 10 days ago. The only thing I know changed was that I did download the previous NVIDA Driver from a week or so ago.

EDIT - Just ran the Intel Support Assistant and there was no graphics driver update noted (It did say to update Bluetooth and my network, so the assistant did seem to work).

CubeAce wrote on 9/17/2023, 4:30 PM

@Ronald-King

The Studio driver is one driver behind the game ready driver so in theory that could be installed in its place to see if that works. Your graphics card and processor are newer than my own so it's not that. The only other download I've notice lately that may have needed to be updated is the Microsoft net. framework if you haven't installed it yet.

Other than that, I'm stumped.

Hi. Just had another thought.

Do check that if the computer tripped over something that in the program settings that the 'Import / Processing / Export' options are all still set to use the nvidia graphics card. Sometimes, if the program trips up it can set those to use other options like the CPU which would be slower.

Hi,

It looks to me like you are using the Finish Movie button at the upper right of the screen. Instead, use File, Export Movie, Video as MPEG-4. Check the box for Display all and then open the dropdown to select the export type and parameters that you want. You will see the parameters on the screen once selected.

Ray mentioned "Do check that if the computer tripped over something that in the program settings that the 'Import / Processing / Export' options are all still set to use the nvidia graphics card." This is in the Program Settings (shortcut Y), Device Options, under Hardware acceleration.

@CubeAce - Thanks. The settings were all correctly pointing to the NVIDA card. I don't think I want to try the studio drivers just yet. I know it previously worked with the game drivers as I have never installed the studio ones. My .NET framework is all up to date.

@browj - Thanks for the thought, but I have been using File, Export Movie, Video as MPEG-4 as you noted for all exports.

I also just now tried to revert to an older NVIDA game driver that should have been what was installed when it worked, but no joy.

Ron, are you exporting the same project? The encoding speed here depends on the file type you are editing/exporting from. From MP4 is fast, AVI/MPEG 2 is not as fast.

I haven't noticed any change in export speed in the last few days (I have the RTX 3060ti too).

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Yes. I needed to make a minor change to a project, So I just opened, made the very minor change to the content, and then re-exported. I am exporting as a MPEG-4 (MP4) file.

My I ask, are you seeing the note to "upgrade graphics drivers" in your Mixdown window (the one that shows the export progress for MP4? Besides the time difference, that is new for me. I was not seeing that two weeks ago.

EDIT - Actually, I was trying again with the same results, and while bored waiting I hit the little button to show the video while rendering. This expanded the title bar so I can now see the whole message (not encouraging). It says:

"Mixdown... (Please update your graphics card driver. Hardware encoding has been deactivated.)"

So, I am not going nuts, something has changed. But I do have the latest drivers (installed, uninstalled, older one installed and uninstalled, and most recent re-installed). I am at a loss as to what to do.

Hi Ronald.

I'm not sure any of us has seen this problem before.

Try opening Task Manager (Ctrl Alt Del) and see if the graphics cards are actually being used by looking at the Performance tab while rendering and that the program is not giving a false warning.

If it is not working then try going to Windows Settings / Display / Graphics settings and you should find this page.

Use the 'Choose an app to set preference' from the Desktop choices and hunt down the programs exe file somewhere near C: / Program Files / Magix (version) and set it to 'Let Windows Decide'. This should be the default behaviour when the program is installed but could have been corrupted by an update of Windows.

Run the program again and see if it is working as it should.

You can also check the drivers for the card are working in Windows by just right clicking any part of your screen and selecting the NVIDIA Control Panel and checking the nvidia cards status under Help / System Information or going the Windows Device Manager route.

You have a newer system and program version than I do so there are other options to check that I can't use such as resizeable bar that my processor and motherboard do not support or you are probably on Windows 11 which I am not.

At that point you will need someone more familiar with newer hardware / software / operating system experience than I have.

Ray.

Thanks - Here is what I've got:

  • Task Manager indicates NO GPU activity, but increased CPU on export render.
  • I had to set MS to "Let Windows Decide" under Display Graphics, but that made no difference.
  • The Device manager indicates that the drivers are working correctly.

I also played around with some other encodings. The HVEC encoding DOES use hardware acceleration., It encodes my video in 30 second and you can see the GPU being used in Task Manager. The problem is, I can't use that encoding for my purposes.

Apart from trying to reinstall the program which I would only ever advise as a last resort I can't think of many more things to check.

Have you tried setting the program back to it's default settings?

Have you moved any of the programs folder locations?

Have you tried right clicking the start icon and selecting 'Run as Administrator' ?

Short of that I will try to get @johnebaker 's attention for further suggestions.

Hi.

That's very odd. I once lost the ability to play MPEG-4 files after a Windows update but the files would not play in Windows Film and TV either. I had to download a single MP4 wrapper but doing that is risky and doesn't always work.

That has made me have one other thought that John Baker once brought up and that is the Magix programs do not like having other codec packs loaded onto the operating system and can cause the programs to misbehave. The K-Lite Codec Pack has been known to cause problems on some machines.

Do you have any such codec packs installed?

Hi

I have the same issue you are having with the message 'in the Mixdown window that I need to update my graphics drivers'.

However I only get this under very specific conditions:

  • The export format is AVCHD* not MP4/h.264

    and

  • Both the Processing and Export options previously mentioned above are set to the RTX GPU.

* AVCHD (AVC) is a subset of the h.264 ecoding format and is the 'standard' Blu-Ray encoding format

Setting both the Processing and Export options to use the Intel iGPU, UHD 630 in my case, hardware accelerates the export.

Try changing your processing and Export options to your UHD 750 or selecting one of the MP4 export options shown in the image below, do not change any of the Advanced settings of the preset.

I suspect that this is either:

  • An issue with RTX drivers 563.40 and later

    Or

  • A bug introduced with MMS 2024 patch 23.0.1.180

Note: Magix recommend using the Game Ready (GRD) drivers not the Studio drivers.

OK, nothing you mentioned made any difference. Setting the Processing and Export to CPU did not help, nor did selecting a choice from the list as you noted.

BUT...

Once I reverted everything back to the way I had it, IT WORKED! Export went from 6 min. down to 1 min. and the message changed to "(hardware encoding)"

I can't know for sure since I made several changes, but my best guess is that switching the Processing and Export to CPU and then back to GPU made something inside 'click'.

Hi John.

It could well be the nvidia driver. I was using the latest game ready driver (537.34) but was suffering a different problem with exporting only, sometimes only getting a blank video with audio. When I reverted to the Studio driver (536.99) (Seemingly one patch behind) I've had no problems since. It was my reasoning behind my second reply.

Hi Ray

Reverted to the SD driver 536.99 - clean install - and the issue persists.

However I have narrowed it down even further - it only occurs when exporting as AVCHD interlaced only for both PAL 25 fps and NTSC 29.97 fps.

Exporting as Progressive AVCHD - no update drivers message and accelerates as normal..

@johnebaker

Hi John.

I don't pretend to even know anything about GPU architecture but notice all three of us are on different generation graphics cards. Is it possible that a given driver may behave slightly differently on different generation cards?

Personally I don't see how and at present can't try your result as I'm half way through a 13 hour render of a 32 minute project 😂. I've finally found a combination of two effects that is pushing the limits of my processing power which are NB HDR effect combined with VPX's Size, Position, Rotation. CPU and Intel GPU just about ticking over and my nvidia card is in overdrive grabbing an additional 4GB of system reserved graphics memory.

OK, its back again. I found a typo in the project I was working on per all my comments above, came back to it, fixed the typo, and now hardware rendering is off again with the statement to update my graphics card drivers. I replicated the changes I thought fixed it (as noted above), but they did not. UGH!

CubeAce wrote on 9/28/2023, 11:22 AM

@Ronald-King

Hi Ronald.

That's disappointing.

Sometimes with other audio programs in the past I have lost a driver from loading that has prevented me from using my MIDI controller. The cure was always to use the Windows 'Restart' button ↺that gives the computer a fresh reboot as opposed to a shutdown that stores the computers present state for a quicker restart.

I don't know if you have tried that or whether it will work. If not you could also try going back to a previous Windows restore point.

Ray.
