how can I listen to clicked-on notes in the midi editor so that it sounds like a normal piano?

I'm using MM17 with Windows 7. I have some midi files that I want to edit. When I bring the track up, double click on it to open the midi editor, and hit play, I hear the music just like it sounded when I recorded it from the piano keyboard. Now if I want to edit the notes, it's easy enough to move them around, but when I click on one, I don't hear anything. At the top of the screen in the Instr. box, it's empty. I'm guessing that's why I don't hear anything. If I click on that drop-down menu, I see electric piano and then some more sub-selections. If I pick one of them, I can hear sounds when I click on notes, but they sound very soft and pretty awful. I just want to be able to hear the normal piano. When I used MM11 deluxe, it defaulted to the typical piano sound and it was great. How can I get that piano sound back?

 

Under Options, Play clicked-on notes is checked.

Yeah....but, WHICH MMM-17?  Basic or Premium?

To get the basic, mono acoustic piano, go into the instrument menu and choose "No VST".  Vita will then default to the basic piano sound.

Assuming your version has it, the plain "Acoustic Piano" in the VSTi's is a stereo version of the default mono acoustic piano.

It's MM17 - basic. I assume I can get to the instrument menu by looking in the box at the top of the screen, a little to the right. It says, "Instr." "No VSTi" was already checked. That didn't result in me getting any sound when I click on the notes. I also don't see any "acoustic piano" option. There's plenty of acoustic guitar, drum, and percussion, but no piano. The only piano options are electric piano. This is driving me a little nutty.

You have no acoustic piano options because you have the Basic version.  That's why I asked (and would be important for you to tell us in the first place).  But, when you have "'No VST" checked, do you get the default mono acoustic piano?

You need to open Vita.  In the Options menu, check to see if "Play clicked-on notes (ALT+P)" is checked.

You can also access track MIDI instruments throught the track menu (the triangle on the right side of the track header just above the "FX" menu).

This is pretty irritating for a couple reasons. 1) I can't believe that something as seemingly standard as an acoustic piano sound would be missing from the basic version, and 2) I bought this on amazon and the description reads as if it's the premium version being sold. I didn't even know a premium version of 17 existed when I bought the basic.

I solved the problem by finding a grand piano vst plugin on the internet, downloaded it, and saved it within my magix folder. Then I was able to choose this piano as an instrument and all is well with the world again.

Play Clicked-on Notes was already checked.

I don't work for Magix, but I suspect that their reasoning for omiting the BASIC piano sound, was just that, its basic, so instead they give you a different sound, sort of like more bang for the buck, but in your situation, you wanted plain ol' vanilla, and thats OK.  Glad its fixed, and wish more people would provide the information concerning their problem like you did.
