How do I extend the run time a background plays?

peter-stone7705 wrote on 6/5/2018, 3:49 PM

I'm having problems trying to extend the run time a background plays.

I have inserted 5 still photo's into my project, with a 7 second run on each, giving 35 seconds of play time.

Then I have tried to import several different moving backgrounds, such as Filmstrip, Clouds and Pattern 2, which all seem to have a standard run time of 20 seconds.

The problem is the background ends at 20 seconds, and I've got 15 seconds of no background.

I've tried extending the file in the normal way, by clicking on the edge and dragging it across, but even though the icon appears when I place my cursor over the edge of the file to extend, the file will not move.

I can't shorten or extend the run time, like I can with an image or music.

Please help? Thanks.

I think.... if your cloud video is 20 secs, you cannot extend it by pulling on one edge as there is no more video after 20 secs (this is, I think called trimming, in the video world).

Not sure if it works... put 2 x 20 secs clips one after another, may be fade transition to smooth out transition between the two. Then shorten the 2nd clip to 15 secs.

wongck's solution is your only way to do this. He says he is "not sure if it works"; I can assure him, and you, that it does! The only caveat is that you have to be very careful about creating the transitions between the two background clips, to avoid a potentially disconcerting "jump" of any moving object when the second clip is beginning.

Thanks two both of you for replying. Yep, that trick worked. I suspected I couldn't extend the moving background, but I was stumped when I couldn't use the slider to reduce it.

Anyway, all looks good, now I can carry on with my project. Thanks again. 😁

Hi,

Strange that you cannot drag the right edge in to reduce the length. Maybe the object is too small on the timeline. Did you try increasing the zoom using the slider or buttons at the bottom of the timeline?

The background videos, as far as I know, are all made as loops, so that there is no need to create a transition if you put 2 of them on the timeline. I tested Clouds, and the change from the end of the first one to the beginning of the second one is seamless.

To clarify, what i suppose to mean was not sure if it works for Peter, as there will be some transition on the background and not really looking as one whole uninterrupted background.

I do this in my holiday DVD intro but then I do want scene transitions in mine.

Yeah, it was strange that I couldn't reduce it with the slider. My first idea was to reduce it down to 7 secs, (same time as the image) and then copy it 5 times, placing the same 7 second background on each individual image.

I tried both the slider and buttons to zoom in. The zoom was pretty high, with the background file showing almost 20 cm's on screen, and I had plenty of area for my cursor. In fact at one point I zoomed all the way in, to be sure.

But I still couldn't reduce it down. I still can't. I don't know if this an issue, a bug or standard. 😒

Hi,

Place the playback marker where you want to trim the clip. Select the clip. Press on U. The right part will be gone.

Yep, that worked. Just the slider wouldn't reduce.

Glad that you got something to work. I just tested Clouds in 2015 Premium and had no trouble dragging the end in.

I also checked for updates. You have 14.0.0.153. There were several patches since then. I suggest that you update. Go under Help, Update online to get the latest patch .187.

Try that to see if it works better.
