How do i get playback to start from the current position and not the beginning?

rchaney617 wrote on 11/30/2012, 8:51 AM

When I play and either stop by the play button or spacebar. it does not start from my current position, It starts from the beginning! my settings in the playback tab is correct. and the letter L is only a temporary fix. It always starts from the beginning. If you can provide a step by step on how to fix

I  use Up-and Down-arrows to start and stop at current position. Try it !

Good one asoeli! I was sure there was a way but mind was blank. Playing around...

[up] start play -- [up again] stop play and return cursor to original start.

[up] start play -- [down] stop play at current cursor position.

But does that fully answer rchaney617's question?

The word 'beginning' is a bit ambiguous. I'm assuming he/she means that the orange triangular playback marker always jumps back to the beginning of the entire movie.

I believe that when you press Space it should stop playback and jump to either the orange triangular playback marker position (i.e. the last playback start point) or the latest position (i.e. stay where it has reached). I don't see a configuration that would make it consistently jump to t=0 but maybe I've missed it?

Those two results should depend on Program settings > Playback > Spacebar behaviour. With my settings

pressing Space starts or stops playback as I would expect, jumping back to the start of the section I've just been playing. And if I want it to stop sometimes at the latest position, I use the down arrow key as Andreas says.

@rchaney617: Did you try it after using File > Settings > Reset to deafults ?

I think rchaney is talking about a bug that has been in MEP for years whereby a certain sequence of actions while editing creates a condition where the marker and playback always jump back to the start of the timeline, no matter where it was sitting prior to the sequence of actions. From then on it happens everytime you press play and it is a real curse!

The project gets corrupted and the only solution is to go to a prior backup project file, or I think maybe copying and pasting the timeline into a new project.

Best of luck.

Wow... 2012... And it's been about as long since I've posted to these forums (or edited videos regularly, really.) But these words were typed only days before the year 2022, and until just a moment ago I've still encountered this mysterious issue without a solution! I was driven here to this thread today, find no viable solution upon it, but discovered THIS viable solution, despite my lack of understanding how or why it worked:

From the help-notes of Magix Movie Edit Pro 19: To move the start and end markers to the beginning or the end of the film again, click "Optimize movie view" in the "Window" menu.

I clicked "Optimize movie view", the timeline appeared nicely, beginning to end, across the full-length of the screen, and the playback location simply stopped it's wonky behavior & "returned to normal", playing from it's selected position. I know that-- logically-- this may not seem to address the issue, but for me it did. Sometimes we need not understand the mechanisms behind why a thing works effectively.

Hope this helps!

Special 'Thank You' to Terrypin, who helped me out many years ago on this forum-- allowing me to keep using Magix enjoyably through the decades, instead of giving-up in frustration on video editing altogether. Blessings to you & all the fine help you've provide to countless thousands (millions?).

Thanks for the kind words! And Happy (ish) Christmas to my friends here.

I’m spending most of my time these days on my other hobby, practical electronics (alright, playing with stuff in my shed workshop), but expect I will get back to video and MEP sometime in 2022.
