I can't open my project!

AlexHall wrote on 10/10/2012, 4:57 AM

Hello. I've been working on a project in several days now, and so did I also today. When I tried to save my work, the program (MX) crashed.

I tried to reopen my file, but I was told "Datei  filename  kann nicht geoffnet werden!" I can't find any backupfiles either. I really hope there is something to do to replicate my project.

I'm using:

Hardware: Intel i7 quad prosessor with 16 gb ram

operating system: Windows 7

Software: Magix Music Maker MX 18.0.0.42 (UDC2)

Best regards

Hi

Hopefully you did not turn off automatic back up.  By default I beleive it is turned on.  Here's how to load or find your backup files.  Just click on the youtube link below.

Just in case you do not find them in the default location, go to windows explorer, select your main hard disc usually labelled "Local Disc (C:)"  in the search box, type in "*bak*.mm" without the quotation marks.  Explorer will now search your hard drive for an music maker backup files that are on it.

Good luck,

George

Hi Again,

I hope you get your project back but in case you can't get it back the easy way, you could use something like "recuva" which is a free data recovery application that works very well.  It has save my bacon more than once.  You will need a second storage device to save the recovered files to have the best chance of a successful recovery if your files are actually anywhere on your hard drive.

You also need to get into the habit of saving your projects frequently.  I actually save them every time I have done more than 10 or 15 minutes work under different file names.  I just add -1, -2, etc every time I do it so I alway have an additional back up.  It takes disc space, yes, but you are running a quad core i7 with 16 gigs of RAM so I can't imagine that you went cheap on storage, and even if you did I just move the older files to a off line hard drive so I always have a path of recovery.  The work involved in creating and producing videos, music and even photographs is just too time intensive to not do multiple backups.  By backups, I mean your files, not a full blown OS and Application backup which you should do at least weekly.  I back up my critical data files pretty much every hour.  I have 3 2TB hard drives, one for OS and applications, the second is for weekly media only back ups, and the third backs up media files every hour.  The first hard drive creates compressed backup files, the other two just copy the files, so if I get in to trouble, I don't actually have to "restore" anything.

@johnebaker, your techniques got me to move to this approach.  @Alexhall, John is a forum moderator who has one of the best approaches to backup and recovery aproach that I have ever seen.

Hey again, thank you for your answers and tips. I've already searched after the file, and I still couldn't find it :-( And I checked the backup setup and it seems to be fine( after your tip, thanks). I can see other backup files to earlier projects but none to this. I'll also look after "recuva", maybe that will work :-)

Thanks again

Best regards
