floridagal,

Backup copies are automatically created (unless you have turned off the feature) and have the extension of .BAK0.MV_ (and BAK1 BAK2 etc) rather than the standard project extension of .MVP. You can rename them but there is a special menu entry 'Load backup project...' under the main 'File' menu.

I doubt anyone can offer suggestions as to what went wrong as you give no information whatsoever about just how you tried to split your project. Did you use the standard menu option?

This is a shot from MEP 2014 but its the same certainly as far back as MEP 17. The split occurs at the position of the playback cursor. It you had it at the beginning or the end of your project one of the new movies will be a total blank.

Regards,

Carl

ADDED: Storychoice102's suggestion of using Ctrl+Z can get messy. It seems to work if you are in the 'original' movie -- the one where you did the split but if you are in the split off section all that happens is the objects there are deleted. The empty movie remains and the split off pieces are still not reattached.

Thanks for your responses.  I had originally tried to break my project by using the "split movie" command.  It deleted the entire project.  I had never turned off any automatic backup feature, but there were no files listed with the .BAKO.MV extension.  Also, the "undo the delete" command would not work.   Have since tried to back up everything.

My computer is an HP with a terrabyte of memory.  Prior to this I had burned a different project to DVD about 65 minutes long which played ok on my DVD player.   (This was called Part 1)  Then had burned this project (called Part 2) which was 80 minutes long to a DVD and found that it would play on my computer but would not play on my DVD player.  The DVD player had an error message that referred to "area limitations."   That's when I tried to split the project, thinking that my Part 2 video must be too long and if I removed 15 minutes it might fit the disk.

Since then I tried to save all the effort I'd spent on this by taking the disk and uploading the contents of the disk back to my computer hard drive to retrieve it.  The Magix program said that it didn't match the original 25 fps and asked it I wanted it to be adjusted.  I said "no" because in the U.S. it should be 29 fps as I understand it.  Why would it have changed to 25 frames per second?  I always choose the NTSC standard.

Then I spent hours editing it and ended up deleting the first 15 minutes of the Part 2 project by manually deleting each scene one by one.   Then when it seemed good, I tried to burn it again.  The burn failed after 40 minutes with the message "Drive is not fully supported!"

Have now purchased DVD-RW disks to save throwing away so many DVD-R disks.

In addition, tonight I tried to burn the first (Part 1) video with the 15 minutes added to it that I had taken off the original Part 2 video.  This effort also failed after 40 minutes with the same error message about the drive not being fully supported.

Very discouraged as I had hoped to make copies of these disks as holiday gifts for friends who had been on a trip with us.

I appreciate the comments in answer to my original question about why the project got deleted when I tried to split it into two.

My additional questions then became why the projects couln't be burned to DVD disks.  After maybe 40 minutes of the Magix program doing the burn steps, it would fail at the end with the message that my drive was not fully supported.  I thought I'd need a new disk drive in my computer or something.

Two comments I read on the forum answering other people's questions did help!  First someone suggested that instead of burnng the project to a DVD disk using Magix, to instead burn it as an image file to my hard drive.  They suggested getting a Nero burn program to then access the image file and do the burn to a DVD.  Found a Nero program at Best Buy and installed it.  It worked, which means my disk drive is okay.

Secondly, the new DVD would burn and play on the computer, but not on our DVD players.   The message was "Cannot play disk due to area limitations."   So we thought maybe we needed a new DVD player.  However, we found that using DVDs that burn at x4 rate seemed not to work as well as those that burn at x16!  Go figure!   Also I needed to be sure to "finalize" the DVD after burning it.  Did so and they now play on my DVD players.  This burning program takes only a matter of minutes to produce a DVD copy!!

Only thing is now the Magix program won't allow me to burn to disk -- just allows me to burn the image file and save to my hard drive.  But I'm able to get the projects burned with Nero and they work on my TV now!!!  Thanks to everyone!!
