I'm pretty sure I've been updated to the 2020 version. New? I hope.

So, as a result of the bug I mentioned in one of my other posts, I tried firing up MMM 2019 edition, and received an update that fixed the issues i had with it as well as gave it a shiny new UI and look. I was very happy with this, though I didn't quite understand it. Looking at the aesthetics of the new 2020 edition, it seems I was updated to 2020 edition for free. Is this the case? If so, is this something that should have been happening the whole time? I first purchased the 2016 edition back when I bought the program for the first time, and have since purchased the 2017 edition and the 2019 edition in the name of upgrading. Was this necessary? Should I have received 2017 and 2019 edition in turn for free the way I received 2020 edition? I'd like to know if I've spent a bunch of money needlessly.

. . . . it seems I was updated to 2020 edition for free. Is this the case? . . . .

If you are using the Plus or Premium version and your annual Update Service subscription is active then as each new release (not a patch) comes out you will be upgraded.

. . . . purchased the 2017 edition and the 2019 edition in the name of upgrading . . . .

As you purchased the 2019 version you must still be within the subscription period

Do note that, currently, upgrades are in effect a new installation and you do need to download and install all your purchased content again.

Features etc from the earlier version, may also be available - see these topics/comments - here, and here.

Hi there.

Major program version updates are now lifetime free, updating versions starting from MM 25.x. (2017)

This means if you have any MM from 25.x through 2019 licensed, the program itself will always prompt to be updated/upgraded towards next update/upgrade version (improvements and core features) for free, while main contents and features will remain just the ones related to specific versions/licenses you paid for.

Thus, by purchasing new versions since 2016 you indeed gained all relative new contents and features (added soundpools, Synths, Fx, ecc.).

So, yes, now you have real version 2020 as the program in itself is concerned, while you still have to "upgrade" the relative v2020 new contents and features provided only by purchasing MM 2020 (upgrade price, in your case) if you evaluate they are worth the price or if you need new tools or simply wish so... ;-)

This thread from MAGIX explains it:
