Hi Bob.

'Extracting a Microsoft Update'

Has anyone ever tried this before? Does this look risky?

This it the type of thing my son would have been doing in his job from time to time when he first started in tech support and would have been a part of his 'Microsoft Tool kits' that he still has on individual USB thumb-drives.

There are still some industrial systems that rely on Win 98.

Anyone used to working with command line code would find it easy. For the average user, possibly not. Certainly it is not something I have ever tried or had to. If it is a fresh install there is nothing to lose if you have the operating system on disk. If not, then don't bother. I am surprised you never had service pack 2 which was mainly based around media handling improvements if my memory serves me correctly (Which it probably isn't but seem to have a hazy recollection of).

Ray.

Hi Mike

. . . . 'Extracting a Microsoft Update' Has anyone ever tried this before? Does this look risky? . . . .

Like @CubeAce's son this is something we did when I was working - we would slipstream updates etc into our build images instead of recreating a complete new image for building computers.

It is a common method for computer system builders and avoids all the potential risks when downloading the required files from dubious / enverifiable sources.

Failures during upgrades are forunately not so common as you would think from all the hype you see on the Internet.
