Judder on exported movies

Tim-Havenith wrote on 6/28/2020, 10:31 AM

Hi,

I've taken a video recording from my Redmi Note 8T. It recorded 1080p at 30fps (H.264).

Movie Edit Pro states that the fps is 29.97, while the details of the file in Windows states 29.95.

I've tried exporting all three fps on MP4 and WMV. All juddery.

Does anyone have any tips that could help me with this?

Thanks,

Tim

@Tim-Havenith

Different programs may give different frame speeds. To be sure of the video's parameters you need to download a free app called MediaInfo.

https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download

Use the Tree View to see all the parameters of the video. You can post the results here.

Two main causes may be if the video is shuddering only during panning.

Or your camera could be producing variable frame rate videos to save memory space on your phone. This is difficult for non phone apps to process and may need converting to a fixed frame rate by another free program such as Hanbrake before it can be used without problems in a video editor.

The MediaInfo app will show whether it is a fixed frame rate or variable.

[Edit]

Some phones will allow you to turn off the variable frame rate which can be on as a default setting in the phone.

@Tim-Havenith

Welcome to the Magix forums.

First, can you tell us exactly which version and variant of MEP you have (you can check the version number under Help>About)?

Can you explain a little more about "juddery", what exactly is juddering? Does the same thing happen when the video is played on the timeline? Also, which export template are you using?

The fact that the camera states it is recording at 30fps but MEP and Windows state different figures could be an indication of variable frame rate. Can you download and install the free MediaInfo utility, point it to your original file from the phone and post the results of the Text view here?

It could also prove helpful to other users if you were to read this post and give us full details of your computer.

Thanks to CubeAce for a perfect reply. Handbrake did exactly what was needed in converting the variable frame rate video my phone was making into a constant frame rate video.

Thanks also to emmrecs for his reply.

@Tim-Havenith

No problem Tim.

We have had a lot of these enquiries as newer phones have started this type of file compression. It varies from phone to phone but as I said, if your phone allows you to switch off variable frame rate you can save yourself having to convert clips in future. Glad it worked and thank you for believing the reply.

This was the first video I'd tried on a new phone. My previous phone was at least 4 years old. I'd never even considered (or heard of) variable frame rate. I think I have some catching up to do!
Unfortunately, with it being such a cheap phone, I haven't been able to find any options, on the phone or online, for turning off the variable rate, but thanks to you, I have a workaround!
