I disagree.

An awful lot of games have 5.1 surround tracks to them even if eventually they get mixed down to stereo.

There's been no mention of 5.1 sounds by the OP. Had he been trying to edit a 5.1 track, then obviously VPX would be better and I would not have suggested MEP. But that is not what he gave us. And I say again "...for the odd occasion..."

As for the lack of waveform, MEP isn't displaying the audio correctly because when you bring the WAV back onto the timeline, even though the waveform levels (and volume) are good before and after the export (after I normalised).

So using my method, you do need to export both audio tracks to get meaningful waveforms to allow editing.
