Magix freezes when going to Program Settings

adi123 wrote on 6/5/2020, 12:00 PM

Hi all,

I have Magix Movie Edit Pro Premium 2019.

Whenever I go to File - Settings - Program..., Magix freezes, and I cannot close, restart or kill it anymore - I need to restart the machine. Even Task Manager cannot kill it, saying the program "does not respond".

I have no idea what it could be, and there is also no error log popping up. Does someone else know this issue? I have not found anything on the internet about that...

Thank you for any hint!

Kind regards,

Adi

Hi Adi and Welcome to the Movie Edit Pro user forum.

Could we have your computers complete specifications please and the amount of free space available on your C: drive. Also where do you store your project files and where do you export them to? How much drive space free are on those drives? What is the average file size of one of your projects?

Ray.

Hi,

Thank you for your response, and the welcome!

I run MEP on a Lenovo T480 laptop, Windows 10, with an i7-8550U and 16gigs of Ram.
I have 49.9gigs free space on C:, so I think it should not be a memory issue.

It is also independent of the project - the error occurs even without a project open. The project I am working on last is about 4.5MB large, should not be too much either...

I would like to access the program settings to check it uses the graphics card I have, but I cannot because of ... you know, the issue.

Thanks for any other advise!

Kind regards,

Adi

Hi

Does the T480 have the optional NVidia MX150 graphics card fitted?

Hi Adi.

Is everything being done on the C: drive? Are there other drives involved? for instance, are project files on the C: drive? Do you export final files to the C: drive?

I know that nearly 50GB of free space seems a lot but we have seen issues here in the past where freeing up drive space helps and a lack of it seems the main reason for MEP freezing on start up. When you open up MEP, a lot of data gets put onto ram but starts to use disc space well before it uses the full amount of ram. If you have been using video files from the C: drive and then exporting the final rendered file back to the C: drive this takes up very large amounts of disk space. Possibly more space than you have. If you have made more than one project before all this freezing kicked off, MEP will still be looking for associated files on startup.

I'm currently exporting a two minute file from MEP and I have 21.6GB of ram in use with another 17GB cached (Disk in use) so it's difficult to predict what resources are needed.

So if you are doing everything on the C: drive the first thing I would try is either freeing up space or cut and pasting existing projects on the C: drive to another drive to see if that helps.

On the plus side your CPU is fine for MEP and have enough ram if you are not dealing too much with 4K footage.

Ray.

@johnebaker

Hi,
Yes, it has the NVidia MX150. I was checking during rendering, and it appeared to use the intel graphics instead, so I wanted to check... Then the issue.

Kind regards,

Adi

@CubeAce

Hi Ray,

No, only C: is involved. I have only C: as partition, but also some mobile devices (USB, SD card etc) plugged with data (raw video). However, I copy all data I am using locally, so that should not be an issue.

I will try again with freeing up space and moving projects around. Maybe that does the trick.

I keep you (and all forum readers) posted.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Kind regards,

Adi

Hi

. . . . it has the NVidia MX150 . . . .

That is what I suspected.

As you can get into the program try resetting the program to its default settings - File, Settings, Reset program settings. . . .

Hopefully that should clear the issue.

@CubeAce @johnebaker

Hi all,

Thank you for your inputs.

I tried the tip from John, resetting the program settings. This did not solve the issue.

One restart later, I freed up disk space on C:, there is now 92gigs available. This as well did not solve the issue.

So, this problem remains.

Do you have any other suggestions I could try?

I was thinking of reinstalling MEP, I might do this later today. Would not mind if we can fix it otherwise though, haha :)

Thanks for your support so far anyway!

Kind regards,

Adi

@adi123

Hi

Has the freezing occurred from initial install on the Lenovo or only started doing it recently?

If you decide to go for a full re-install - use Revo Uninstaller to do this, it will pass you to the standard Windows uninstaller first and then, on return Revo, prompt you to do a scan for cleaning up all the files left behind and fragments in the registry - do this, then restart the laptop and install MEP again.

If you do not do this you will not get a clean install.

@johnebaker

Hi,

I do not remember to have this issue before, but I did not use MEP extensively, and might not have used program settings at that point - Cannot say.

I will try Revo as you advised, I let you know if this does the trick. Thank you!

Kind regards,
Adi

Hi all,

Thank you very much for your advice. I finally got it fixed.

I could not find out what the issue was in the end, but a complete reinstall (using the mentioned revo uninstaller) did the trick. I can now access program settings without a crash/freeze.

Thanks again for the support!

Kind regards,

Adi
