Masks and the use of the Chroma Key Enquiry.

CubeAce wrote on 5/21/2020, 9:30 AM

This is for all the heavy users and more technically minded or those who have attempted similar.

I finally finished my 'Tanks' at the War and Peace Revival Opening sequence more or less as I wanted it.

My problem was the seeming need to have at least four layers of differing mask layers to complete the task.

The first bit I showed earlier was the easy bit. The hard bit was adding what I wanted to do with the year title.

I ended up doing each bit a bit at a time as the lettering went from foreground into the background title and then rendering various bits as an MP4 files to bring back into the project and add another layer. I ended up creating 27 tracks to achieve this although broken down into sections to work on. I ended up having to alternate between using white and black backgrounds for the various layers and did quite well quality wise up to the last layer where I encountered my earlier 'jaggies' problem. So I had to either add shadowing to help hide the problem or have some bleed-through on the images from the 'TANKS' text in the shadow areas.

For those always worried about losing quality on exporting I will say that what you see within the Tanks text is a fifth generation copy or the original clips and I'm surprise how well it turned out.

So that 2021 text was the real headache trying to think of a way to get it to sit behind the Tanks text in a transition from foreground to background. If anyone can come up with a shorter way around this I would be grateful.

Here is the finished title sequence. Please keep your eye on the transition of the year date and subsequent use which for me was the important bit and where Borris FX could not keep a hold of the key framing so resorted to plain text within MEP.

@johnebaker

That's a really good effort John and obviously took you much less time than I spent on mine. You missed some masking on the s and e but I love the way the letters look. Like mirrored glass, and much crisper than mine.

If you managed to get that far without having to bounce exported files back into the project I'm all ears. I had to sit and visualize the transition for some time before even coming up with any way of doing it. It made my head hurt.

Overall I'd still give your version a ten as yours is much crisper looking than mine.

I think part of my problem was using nine different video clips. Five of which were within the Tanks text. Trying to stop bleed-through in the shadows underneath the tanks was the worst and the main cause of me not being able to avoid the return of 'the jaggies' as the balance of the Chroma key mask got very pernickety at that point. Using panning shots with varying light probably didn't help either.

Unless I can find an easier way to do this then I won't be attempting it again that often.

Ray.

Hi Ray

This is the timeline

Annotated:

As you can see it appears to be upside down in that the background is on the highest track number - it does not work the other way round in what would be classed as normal ie background on track 1.

All the 'effect' is in the single mask and uses a, IMO little used effect, (that I had forgotten) of Alpha - it can punch holes through what is 'in front' of (higher track number) to let objects behind (lower track number) appear through.

The title object is the year text that moves

The text mask was quickly created in Paintshop Pro - and is double the resolution of the export - in this case 3840 x 2160 px.

The 'missing' part of the mask is actually the drop shadow I used, I think it may be better with a narrow bevel on the edges instead, more like a real mirror.

Hi John.

Blast my colour vision, I can hardly make out the text on the objects.

I get tracks 1,3, and 4. What are tracks two and five?

I did try the alpha mask but clearly not like this setup. I could not get alpha to work cleanly.

So track one = foreground for 'mirror lettering'. Not the track order I expected.

Track three = white jpeg with black text mask for track four.

Track four = text background image.

Ah. Now I get it. (I think).

Tracks two and five are 2018 moving text.

So is the Chroma alpha mask on track three?

I also notice why the bleed-through on the 's' and 'e' occurred. Easy fix.

It was the Chroma Key not doing what I wanted each time despite whether I used white or black backgrounds with alternate coloured text that was causing me the most problems and the amount of exporting and importing of the bits I got to work as I went along.

Have I got this correct? If so I will give it one more go.

If this works I am going to be so relieved as this could be done within a complete project timeline and altered if needed later. Not to mention possibly eight hours less work.

Amazing.

Thank you.

Ray.

Hi John.

Well, this is odd. I have the same track number count and effects Mask type (Except for the font bevelling) and it works, but I still can't use the alpha channel. Perhaps because my date lettering is red instead of white? The Black Chroma key is working like a charm though. It seems crisp but now it is sharp I can't add any shadow around the Tank lettering. I'm rendering it now but will add the result in the morning. I'm actually feeling tired for once.

The good news is I can do it in one go so thank you for that. It could now be incorporated into an actual project at any point instead of an imported video file. It's taken me less than an hour to set up from scratch.

I have made notes and screen grabs like crazy so as not to forget.

Thank you so much. Now I don't understand why I found it difficult to get my head around., but I bet I'll need my notes in the morning.

[Edit] I just looked at your second image. Alpha arrow up? I don't see this at my end. Will check in the morning.

Ray.

Hi Ray

. . . . not using an alpha mask. . . . .

The titling is looking much clearer - if you did not use and black/white mask image for 'TANKS' and apply Chromakey Alpha to it, what did you use?

. . . . I am looking for signs of that up arrow and changing to an alpha mask . . . .

Look at the image of the timeline I posted - on the mask at the left end you will see an arrow for the effects direction - this appears when you hover the mouse over the mask after Chromakey Alpha has been applied, here is a larger version of that section.

Yes, that clearer association with the tank seems better IMO.

Impatience got the better of me. But I'm not satisfied with this first attempt, which is not crisp enough. Maybe I need a narrow border around the main text.

BTW, I think you only see the white alpha arrow when hovering. Mine is Down.

Hi Terry.

I think you have your alpha mask working back to front. Try swapping the two slider positions around so that Threshold Video 1 is off and 2 is on, assuming your main text is black on a white background.

I did my text in MEP as well. Making the text as large as I could in the text editor first and than using Size/Position for flying the text inward.

Hi John.

You can if you wish 😉. John EB's solution above helps me a lot but I have plans to take this effect up a few notches in other directions yet. There's a lot that can be done in stills photography editing I'm trying to figure out how to do with video that I haven't seen done yet. Maybe it's the lockdown but my brain is going into overdrive.

I just have to learn to look at track layouts as 3D in a 2D environment.

Need my notebook.

Plus too much coffee?

Hi John.

Haven't drank coffee for over 30 years and I have about 5 pints of beer a year (no not a typo this time and not all at the same time) and those are what I sometimes get as a Christmas selection set. I do have an occasional Southern Comfort neat or Whisky but that's even rarer. I'm afraid it's water or tea for me 😇.

Could be hallucinations on few hours of sleep though. 😵

Hi Terry.

I think you have your alpha mask working back to front. Try swapping the two slider positions around so that Threshold Video 1 is off and 2 is on, assuming your main text is black on a white background.

Hi Ray,

I'll look at this again later, but meanwhile:

- I used the default chroma key settings

- I took John's annotated timeline screenshot verbatim, without carefully checking it against his and your exported videos. The latter do indeed show the 2018 as being within the text, not behind it.

Now, some lunch followed by Radio 4's Any Questions.
